Diablo/Torchlight are rogue-like hack and slash games which LoG is respectively dungeon crawlers in general are not.

Most dungeon crawling games are characterized by a hack and slash mindset, where combat and loot is more important than Puzzles.

Read the paragraph under D&D.
According to Gary Gygax (in an interview with Dungeon #112), the first dungeon crawl was part of a wargame in which the invading force entered the enemy's castle through a former escape tunnel dug from the fortress's dungeon. The group had so much fun with this scenario that it was repeated over and over with increasingly complex dungeons until the wargame aspect of the game was dropped in favor of exploring the dungeon.
In other words: combat is secondary in a dungeon crawl.
Depending on the scenario it can even be completely dumped as some LoG1 mods have proofed.

It says it dropped the "wargame aspect", not the combat system entirely.

So Gary Gygax is simply saying D&D used to be like Warhammer 40k, but instead it dropped that wargame aspect of gameplay and focused on dungeon exploration. Link = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Editions_o ... 26_Dragons (explaining that the wargame aspect was dropped)

Dungeon exploration occurs in roguelikes and hack and slash games like Diablo and Torchlight. Dungeon exploration doesn't imply no combat. Hell, if there was no combat it wouldn't be dungeon exploration now would it... it would be Amnesia instead.

All those mods are proving is that Grimrock would make a better looking Myst, which was a puzzle-game with no combat.

More likely the esoteric puzzle like strategy was dropped from the game (D&D) in favor of more loot, hack and slash, and dungeon delving.

Dungeon exploring is just another phrase for dungeon crawling. Combat is not required to do that. It's only there to spice up things.

Ahhh, but the same argument can be made for puzzles, can it not? Puzzles are there to spice it up.

If a dungeon was not about combat or puzzles it would be a very dull experience.

But we are getting off track again.

Its not about removing puzzles.

Its about having a good combat experience in the game, which it is lacking.
