who else refuses to use a weapon's limited charges ?
who else refuses to use a weapon's limited charges ?
I don't know why but whenever I get "limited charges" items in games.. I tend to just not use them at all, ever.
Furthermore... many of these weapons with 7-8 charges require a very exepensive skill point to be spent in a skill tree I would otherwise never spend (usually magic skill on a pure melee character).
Like hell I'm going to spend a point in Lightning or Fire magic on my minotaur barbarian just so I can use a weapon charge 7 times !!!
What a terrible concept. If the weapons could be recharged at a crystal now that would make it worth it. I know there are shards that recharge weapons but those are ultra rare and can't be crafted afaik.
I hope they change this in a future patch

Re: who else refuses to use a weapon's limited charges ?
Well, to be honest, in GR2, I only remember coming across 1 item with non-renewable charges: the fire sword (found 2 of them). Can't recall any others.
As such, they seem like such a minor part of the game it's not really worth any angst over imo. finished my playthru without ever using any of my red crystals.
I tried to be as thorough as possible going through the content. what other items were there with non-renewable charges?

Re: who else refuses to use a weapon's limited charges ?
There is such an item in this game, for which I used 1 skillpoint in magic and also will use all of my red crystals for.
I also can see these working for some people who will want to run non magical party or for a mage with different focus on skills for example, for there are some nice items with spells what otherwise require heavy investing in a spesific tree.

Re: who else refuses to use a weapon's limited charges ?
Yes, this is a common issue in Grimrock (and lots of other games).
The Lightning Bolt, Fireball, or Poison Bolt, of the various magical melee weapons just didn't really do enough to justify using them. Having limited charges and a skill investment suggests that the effects are very powerful and valuable. Then you find out that you nearly have to deplete the entire supply of charges to defeat one foe, of which you must fight dozens and dozens over the course of the game.
If I decide to run through the game a second time, though, I certainly wouldn't hesitate to use any of these. The pink crystals are numerous enough and there are fairly powerful charges like which is probably the most valuable item for a hardcore ironman single-crystal run that I could imagine.

Re: who else refuses to use a weapon's limited charges ?
I'm at the crystal mines now.. with only two essences so I guess I'm only about halfway through the game and I've already come accross 4 such items. I'm betting you mean the meteor hammer?
Even that I wouldn't spend 1 point into fire magic for, the melee on the meteor hammer generally does as much if not more damage then the meteor spell would.. and I already have a mage that can cast it.
I would love to use it if it wasn't for the charges but I won't because of them.

meteor hammer can be spammed forever, so long as you have energy. not, non-renewable charges.vesper8 wrote:I'm at the crystal mines now.. with only two essences so I guess I'm only about halfway through the game and I've already come accross 4 such items. I'm betting you mean the meteor hammer?

I found the shield with immunity to petrify + heal but never had a chance to use it. Was rocking the meteor shield on my melee dude (ran a 2-mage, 1 ranged, 1 melee set-up). were the heal casts non-renewable charges?
Re: who else refuses to use a weapon's limited charges ?
what? my meteor hammer shows 7-8 charges on it. Keep in mind you don't see the charges meter if you don't have the required skill. When I leveled up my minotaur I tried to put 1 point into Fire Magic to confirm this.. and sure enough I saw the limited charges. And then I reloaded my save so I don't waste that point.HotMaarl wrote:meteor hammer can be spammed forever, so long as you have energy. not, non-renewable charges.vesper8 wrote:I'm at the crystal mines now.. with only two essences so I guess I'm only about halfway through the game and I've already come accross 4 such items. Yeah, the Crystal Shield has set charges. But it is a decent amount and a powerful effect.HotMaarl wrote:meteor hammer can be spammed forever, so long as you have energy. not, non-renewable charges.vesper8 wrote:I'm at the crystal mines now.. with only two essences so I guess I'm only about halfway through the game and I've already come accross 4 such items. Re: who else refuses to use a weapon's limited charges ?
you may be right. I may have to retract. I played with the hammer a lot but it's possible, not enough to exhaust it. I never noticed any diminishing charges on it. With just 1 melee in my party it's really hard justify NOT using 'devastate' from the Bane axe as a priority.vesper8 wrote: what? my meteor hammer shows 7-8 charges on it. Meteor hammer has +20 accuracy, making it vastly superior to bane.HotMaarl wrote:you may be right. I may have to retract. I played with the hammer a lot but it's possible, not enough to exhaust it. The charge ability is ranged, which will come in handy.
