What causes you to download a custom map?

Post by Alaric »

I am thinking about creating a small custom map, which would take place in setting that I'm developing via a series of short stories. The primary goal would be to help me better visualize (and thus better describe) some locations, but since I'm going to be spending time on it anyway, I guess it would be cool if other people played it. Before I begin, I would be very curious to know what people find interesting or attractive about player-made mods. If you downloaded any, what caused you to pick those particular ones?

I dont need these all at the same time but this is what normally peeks my interest

some sort of narrative
Interesting puzzles
challenging but winnable combat setups.
Moduals that are part of a series that allow you to export/import you group between moduals

And this is what makes not want to download a map.

Anything describing it self as combat focused (Because they tend to be unfairly balanced)
remakes of stuff I've already played before
Anything that goes out of its way to brand it self as hard (Because they tend to be unfairly balanced)
It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.
My end game stats LoG 1st play through

puzzles puzzles puzzles!!

non linear interconnected map designs (not just a stereotypical go west get item come back go north etc etc.)

unique game mechanics

story

I like custom maps a lot and getting to know the way different minds work.

If it looks like it's a lot like the base game without a lot of out-of-place artwork. Or crazy disco lighting. If someone makes a Roguelike version of the game I'd want to check that out too to see if it works as a fun experience. For LoG1 Phitt's mine dungeon stood out to me because it had a good mix of puzzles and combat, and while it had a huge amount of custom artwork, it all meshed seamlessly with the game's existing artwork. (And generally looked awesome)

I sort by rating and get the top maps and go through them.

Loot is the main thing for me. If there is cool loot and secrets.

Likes:
Custom assets.
New mechanics.
Puzzles with a smooth progression from easy to hard.
Challenging combat can be fun but if it's too hard early on then it can feel really boring. better to start easy and go harder as you progress with maybe a few really challenging areas in between.
Story and "Toorum" notes.

Dislikes:
Deathtraps and anything that hurts you in a cheap way without warning or explanation.
Badly done puzzles/riddles. Like, that doesn't even make any friggin sense!
Mixing tile sets in a way that doesn't look good at all. gaps, mismatches, clipping, etc
Artwork that isn't your own or specifically made for your dungeon/mod.

Something unique, something that i haven't seen in the original game, or something that expands the original Game.
I downloaded the Masterquest to replay the game, but with a twist, or the One Room Round Robins to see which creative ideas the community had(and both of them are fantastic!).

I hope someone will make a scifi based mod. Something with a Space Station and you are the only survivor(or maybe you can find 3 more?), maybe a "bad" AI which is out to kill all meatba...err Humans. Oh man..that would be unbelievable awesome =)
