Alchemist herb-growing? Location of a magic catalyst? etc.

Talk about anything related to Legend of Grimrock 2 here.

Can someone help me find the catalyst? Already level 5 and went back to the forest, but cannot find it, searched every inch for maybe a whole hour!

Thanks!

Welp, you've got a couple options.
Twigroot:
SpoilerShow
I think you take the lower-left stairs on the map, down to that very short dungeon. Check the walls of the room with the treasure chest. I think that might be it.

Forgotten River
SpoilerShow
2 options here. Both require a gold key. You can find a gold key in The Cache, the entrance to which is located here. It's even got a sign and everything. (I think it's the stairs down after the blue crystal). It's, like, right next to the front of the castle. Real hard to miss.
Preferrable option: Use that gold key to open the Conjurer's Cache. This'll get you the orb of radiance, which can cast Light on it's own.
Secondary option: Near the castle, there's a force-cube protecting a pedestal. On that pedestal is the Nectarbranch Wand.

...There may also be a quarterstaff in one of the dungeons in the Forgotten River.
You might confuse it for a blow-pipe when it's on the ground. I think I did.

Alchemist is definitely worth it. It takes a short time of a little more challenge to start it up if you are going caster but the herbs multiplying is amazing imho.
I have 2 alchys in the back. One is a wizard and one is a thrower and missile expert.
I have more herbs by the time I got to the Forgotten river than I often did at any time in my last playthrough.
SpoilerShow
The whitewood wand is the quickest route to a catalyst. Twiggy tunnels IRC. Ignore the branch and use the gold key on conjurer cache if you are going to use a key for a catalyst.
Also bee line it to the river and around to the island. Secret with moss and crystal flower in island area. By then you will have all herbs multiplying in packs.
I am seriously debating playing my next game through as 4 alchemists. Aside from the obvious barbarian extra hp you do not lose much by using alchemist and then speccing him/her anyway you choose. Of course 1 farmer and 3 alchemists may also be a cool choice for an eventual power team or 2 2 respectively.
The thing about both of these new classes to LOG is theoretically they can acquire limitless stats and exp.
It is too bad farmer can not forge though the same way alchys do or some other type of forage. I would love to play dual class farmer/alchemist too if that was possible.

As was mentioned, there's 1 in twigroot, 2 in forbidden river (both need gold keys), and there's also two pretty easily reached in the area north of forbidden river, although one of those needs a gold key and you won't know how to get to it until later. The other one in that area is pretty easy to grab.

[edit]
Ok, maybe easy to grab is an overstatement. I just beelined for it in my attempt at hard ironman single use crystals, and got massacred. Oh well, try again tomorrow, I suppose. :)

Thanks Dematto, Varbis. I had already found the secret next to the treasure room in the small dungeon south west of Twigroot forest. I don't remember what I found there but I have no catalyst in my inventories.

Is the item needed for herb growing called 'catalyst''? I do have a Frostbite Necklace, not sure what good it is for.

Going to search the area north of Forgotten River now, hope I can find it! Is it in Sleet Island area (which is north) or in Forgotten River section itself?

Alchemists grow herbs when taking steps in the game. More valuable herbs require more steps, from 850 per herb up to 4500. Sounds like a lot, but you'll be doing a lot of walking...

That secret alcove you found has what you need to cast spells for non-mage type characters. If you didn't find it there, you might want to head back and check the floor.

Oh wait - I think I was confused. Do alchemist need a specific item for herbs to grow? I thought an item called 'catalyst' was required!

Went, nothing on the floor. How is this item called? Would be useful for me to have a second caster in my group.

No the catalyst is for casting mage spells. Alchemist just grow stuff as part of their class right out of the box even without the alchemistry skill.

It is hidden so you will need to do what you need to do for most hidden things.

There is a button on the wall you are most likely missing
It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.
My end game stats LoG 1st play through

Thanks Saice.

Ah, ok. So I need to find the Catalyst then, and good to know my herbs are growing. I did suspect I had a few more than I had picked up!

About the secret...
SpoilerShow
I have found the small room, by pressing the switch, in the chest room. In the corner, I remember also there was an enemy inside it! But I don't have the Catalyst on me, nor I found it there on the floor. I guess I dropped it by mistake or something? Thanks anyway!
Such fun game!
