I tried variations on extinguishing all the light in the room, closing all the doors, extinguishing my own light, and even throwing dark bolts around. So if it's just a matter of making the room dark, I didn't get it.
To proceed you need to remove all torches in the moon area and light all the torches in the sun area and that opens the way forward for you in the temple.

Right, did you read what we're saying? We know how to open the passage by illuminating the Champion of the Sun - that's not the issue at hand.
Ah, I'm sorry, I see what you mean. You're suggesting that the door is opened by solving both at once. I think that seemed so simple that it didn't occur to us.

You're absolutely correct, I moved the torches from the sconces near the Guardian Of The Moon to the Guardian Of The Sun, thereby illuminating the latter and placing the former in shadow. So I guess I sort of inadvertently did them both at once while thinking I was only solving the Sun.
Ah! Alright, i didn't really notice that you need to remove the torches from the moon room, since i stole one from there to light up the sun room. If you know what i mean.
