Little problem getting into the pyramid...

I think I dropped the

serpent staff

somewhere and it seems that I need it to get into the pyramid. Is my only solution to hopefully go back and find it wherever I left it, or is there another way in?

you definitely need this, because you are going to use serpent staff inside the pyramid as well

however the door won't open. I've tried putting it in the alcove and hitting the statues with it. Is my game bugged or am I doing something wrong? My only clue is
