You should have found a scroll somewhere in the catacombs.

Under, and under, and over, and all over again, and over.

Walk under the bridge, turn around and walk under it again. Climb one of the ladders and walk over the bridge. Now go back under the bridge, then under it again, then climb a ladder and walk over it. The gate will open.
