There is a button on the wall behind the southernmost pit, but I found no way to close the trap door to get to it.

No problem there. During beta each time i reached the end I had lockpicks left.

When you fight the Tricker (Leprechaun).. he will open some walls to unleash turtles. In the first room he opens, there's a button on the wall that closes a nearby pit. Over that pit is a button that leads to a secret area. Alas... no golden key in there. Just some loot.
