Barbarian feels better as a tank than the Knight

Post by steelsoldier »

I feel like the Barbarian is a much more powerful and better Tank than the Knight at the moment, does anyone else agree on this one?

To be honest, my Mino Barbarian is as much tanky as my Lizardman (!) Knight (with equipped shield) with the Elemental Resistance and double potions effect skill tank.
While the Salamander put max points in armor the cow invested all points in heavy weapon, while beeing a tanky as hell cow despite almost all crappy gear and -10 evasion he is seldom the first to die and he dishes out damage like a madman.

A bit better tanking skills on the knight and a build in taunt which raises the chance of the knight to receive the attack would do the trick here I guess, otherwise in my next playthrugh there surely wont be a knight class in the party anymore, to be honest I think my "tank" is the most useless char in my team :-/

I'm running my knight at 25 evade/28 protection right now. I can't recall ever seeing anything miss him, but if it is, it's not really noticeable. Mino barb on the other side has -10 evasion, 41 protect, and indeed seems to need fewer healing pots to survive.

if evade is supposed to be a straight up chance to evade any attack, that would be fine, but it does not appear that way. based on my experience (through level 8), armor > evade.

maybe evade works differently on a rogue character?

In truth I'm unsure about the knight, My Barbarian seems much much Tankier and a frontline battlemage I made on another file had at lot more protection at the same level (5) it's just one scenario and both characters could probably be min/maxed better but that's not what I do. Maybe the way the knight levels up because more prominent towards the endgame, if heavy armor is really strong and his protection per level kicks in he might be a huge Tank. Not much help but you may be onto something pal :D

He is, early game.
If you let him, I imagine that he'll probably continue to outclass your Knight for a long time.
The protections do, in fact, take a while to get rolling. Even if you go straight for Armor5 by level 4, that extra 4 armor and +25% on gear isn't going to mean much. At most, you'll be...what? 6-8 points ahead? That's really negligible, considering that the slow start is compounded by a MASSIVE difference in health.

Out of the gate, your typical Minotaur Barbarian is probably north of 120HP, while your Knight might be at 80. Early, that 40 HP difference can easily translate to an extra 4-10 attacks your Barbarian can endure.

That health differential needs to be remedied. +5Vit from your points at character creation. The Health trait, a point or two in Athletics, be a Minotaur

However you want to go about it, your Knight needs a larger health pool if he's going to make effective use of his massive protections. Personally, I say Armor 4 can wait a little bit.

The thing is, the main issue I have with the Knight, is that with Barbarian, you can have an huge pool of strength due to the fact that you get 1 strength per level that prevents the armor weight from becoming an issue in the first place, since you are going to be able to carry a lot of weight no matter what.

The other issue is the Barbarian starts with 80 Hit points and gains 10 hit points per level, doesnt matter that the knight is getting 1 protection per level, that hp is going to be substantial in survival later and earlier on, whereas the protection in my opinion will have very little impact in most stages of the game, the HP is useful versus every scenario, Protection is not, same goes with Evasion.

I know that the thing that the developers are trying to pull off, is for the Knight to be good versus physical damage, but the extra 20hp on the start and 3hp per level still make me believe that the barbarian is still the better choice for tanking, even versus physical damage.

Honestly, I would need a lot more opinions from people in order to properly evaluate how good the Knight actually is, but so far, from everything I have experience, I feel like the Knight is inferior as a tank in comparison to the Barbarian.
Plus the fact that I do more damage with the Barbarian as well.

It feels like barbarian is the best class for everything except missile weapons and magic. Though now that I think about it barbarian might actually make a better spellcaster than wizard does, as long as you're fine not using spells till you get the first staff right after shipwreck beach. Though battlemage and maybe farmer are still probably better at it than barbarian.

Have to agree fully. The way armor skill works it feels like hp is way more relevant to a tank and with the added str per level as well it just feels far superior to anything for tanking.

I actually built a front line rogue and barbarian and was going for the super high evasion path like I did in LOG1 but it simply does not exist. BY level 12 in LOG1 I had something like 70 or 80 evasion I only have 30 something at the same level in LOG2.

Seems like LOG 2 is HP>Prot>evasion
where LOG1 prot and evasion could be equivalent and hp was good in addition.
