The key feature that makes this game non boring is that everything is hand crafted and all items unique, almost nothing is random unlike all other action rpgs where you get bored of the randomness of items get nothing to do after you found best weapon / armor.

Fights are won by skill, sometimes gear too but never with make-up. For example the most annoying part about games like Skyrim or Tombraider is that your freaking character blocks your view. I don't want to see the back of myself when i'm fighting something!

I am a fan of might and magic X legacy, I still enjoy playing it even after a few play-through's, but I am a sucker for old-school. M&M X is turn based, and I do tend to prefer turn based, It's more casual if you know what I mean. It would be great if they could make a turn-based LOG, but I read that they tried it out, and discovered that it didn't work. Why it didn't work is anybody's guess, you would think that LOG would be perfect for it, wouldn't you?
Or, if you could switch from RT to TB and vice versa.

Anyway, this seems to have drifted off topic. :)

The main issue with turn based combat (which I adore btw) is that combats tend to be rather lengthy... and could instill frustration/boredom if there is a rinse and repeat pattern.

That is a ruined one, I've made a thread about it in the off-topic section here

whenever the action starts, your focus is on those four little weapon icons and you miss all of the action. Surely there has to be a better way
yeah REPLAY

it's not beyond the bounds of possibilities

twenty years ago when Playstation came out I first noticed a REPLAY feature on the Colin McRae rally games and pretty soon a lot of Racing games out there were doing it

you could REPLAY the session the same as replaying a goal scored in a football session and although the replays started as first person fixed view replays within a year that had changed to random camera angles and even zoom

if that could be done twenty years ago why not in 2014? is this technically too much to ask? this is the exact solution to what you're pointing out here :)

Honestly, it's just a flawed design. Creating poor control scheme and calling it "oldschool". There should be customizable hotkeys for all actions.

You'd still be focusing a lot on icons and heads up displays you dupe.
How do you customize hotkeys for drag and drop anyways?

Looks like you are in panic-mode :D We all went through that so don't worry, it'll be awhile before you adapt...

When the fighting starts just take a deep breath and chill. Concentrate on your movement and placement of strikes.

The 'arcade' element is one of the reasons I play Grimrock, if it didn't have action I'd just make popcorn and play a turn based crawler
uh, you can have real time combat and still have things like intelligent mouse actions, rather than being forced to click on a small button.

you should be able to select your hero with a number key, rt-click on the enemy and have it attack with whatever weapon is available, hold for a second to use the special.

spells could be prepared ahead, attached to a hotkey, and cast by pressing the hotkey.

really, this would ADD to the action and fun of the game.
