I can't seem to figure out Runemaster's Trial in Herder's Den. Any tips?
Things I do know:

You are supposed to change the spell that's being cast
The 9 pressure plates equal the rune table

What spell to cast (no need to tip this, since I can just figure it out once I have the others figured out)
How the pressure plates actually work, since so far I've only been able to change the spell to ice spikes, but no other combo seems to work. One handy thing to know would be how the plates are aligned. When facing the puzzle, are they in the same order as your inventory rune table?
Many thanks.
On the other hand I'm also starting to think this puzzle is just for a bonus and not actually progression, which leads me to wonder what the hell am I supposed to be doing. I'm guessing I should somehow try to make my way deeper into Desarune, but I can't seem to find anything there except for the power gem I got already.
When you face the closed door behind which a spell is being fired, the layout of the plates correspond with the layout of your rune cast bar. You must then hold down all pressure plates representing the runes needed to cast the spell that is being cast behind the door.
You will may have to revisit this puzzle long after you find it, as you may not know the rune combinations for several of the spells, and you may have to guess other spells based on their appearance that you're not able to cast. (Or you can cheat and look it up)
Can you be more explicit on what you have to do? I have ice shards but not enough skills to use it, does that means it won't work? Or what do you really have to do?
I haven't actually gone to finish the trial since I haven't been around the area, but another tip in another thread lead me to understand that I had it all upside down.

You are supposed to replicate the runes needed to cast the spell, not try to change it to another. That's pretty much what stumped me, since ice shards was the spell being cast so I thought that's the one combination I shouldn't be doing.
