sometimes im just not impressed with what I get from locked chests,..... so im afraid I'll use all my picks on sub-par gear... probably save them for later?

I currently have about 15 lockpicks. They're pretty common, especially if you aren't that great at getting 100% of the secrets.

Gold keys are the much more valuable commodity from what I've found.

I ran out of lockpicks pretty quickly. I kept discovering lots of secrets only to have the reward be "hey, awesome job finding this secret, now look at this locked chest you can't have as a reward for your cleverness!"

But later on I started finding plenty of lockpicks so I could return and open the chests. Which wasn't really worth it at that point.

What I do is that I save before opening a chest and then if it's not worth it, reload and keep my lockpick.
