What pains me the most.

Post by Dandy »

You know what pains me the most about the LOG series?
That whenever the action starts, your focus is on those four little weapon icons and you miss all of the action. Surely there has to be a better way.

Sadly, it is the way of many games for now.
Starcraft, always looking at the minimap and resources.
MMOs, always looking at skill bars and health gauges.
Heck, even in Tetris I'd find my eyes primarily focused on the next piece area. (not that there's much to see anyways...)

You look back and forth, or with the corner of your eye, but until better brain-computer interfaces, we're stuck with it for now.
Should only be for a handful more years...

Because LOG is so much faster than Dungeon master you cannot afford to take your eyes of the weapon panel for a second. Maybe hotkey's or a intelligent mouse cursor or something, would get past the problem.

I don't know how many monsters I kill or what they are doing, I just keep clicking until I can't hear their cry's anymore. :)

Yeah i was thinking the same.
I like the combat system, because it is fast and it when you are confronted with several enemys you'll have to concentrate and control your movement and fighting style.

But....i thought it would maybe a good idea to bind to attacks to a button.
Like say when i press 1 the fighter in the top left row will attack. When dual-wielding i could press the button again.
The Wizards and battlemages should memorise spells. 8 Spells for a wizzard should be enough(maybe level dependent) and 4 spells for the battlemage before he has to change to another weapon.

This way you could also implement controller support as you dont have to click on symbols but just press a button.

Edit: But then again..you would loose the abilty to do things on the fly. Need a potion? Just create one. Encountered an enemy which is resistant to your type of spell? just choose another one. Hmmm the attack works fine with button based combat, but the magic system? Thats a completly different story.
Mr WILSOOOON look i MADE FIRE!
Thanks for the laugh Almost Human :)

Hey guys :))

When I first played Grimrock 1 , I had this same gripe.... But after a while it don't bother me anymore, why ?

When I want to play a turn based crawler - I start up Wizardry 8 (one of my favs) or Might and Magic 7

When I want to play one with real time combat - I play DM/Eye of the Beholder or Grimrock 1-2 :D

Looks like you are in panic-mode :D We all went through that so don't worry, it'll be awhile before you adapt...

When the fighting starts just take a deep breath and chill. Concentrate on your movement and placement of strikes.

The 'arcade' element is one of the reasons I play Grimrock, if it didn't have action I'd just make popcorn and play a turn based crawler

I find I have time. I mostly only need to quickly glance down at the weapon panel, except when I'm making potions mid-battle or casting spells. Or quickly glance up to see where I need to move.
Similar happens in every game though, I don't think its something that can change so quickly.
And in some ways, I think multi-tasking like that is a good thing.

What would make this game perfect is if it had skyrim characters like graphics (here i mean seeing them 3rd person with all weapons / armors equipped while still remaining turn based strategy). The key feature that makes this game non boring is that everything is hand crafted and all items unique, almost nothing is random unlike all other action rpgs where you get bored of the randomness of items get nothing to do after you found best weapon / armor.

Did you even play Grimrock or is Skyrim the only thing that connects you to the gaming world?
