The original suggestion by many was simply to have the rune tiles stay clicked; meaning the mage focused on fireballs could easily cast them again and again.
LoG2 doesn't have clickable rune tiles [afaik], but uses a mouse gesture over the runes; not too removed from how Arx Fatalis worked in its own way... But interesting thing about Arx Fatalis, is that it allows the player to hold [shift] while casting, and did queue up to three spells in reserve that could be cast by pressing the 1, 2, or 3 keys. That could probably work in LoG2, and if not present, could probably be modded in.

Re: Quick spellcasting
I'm actually kind of hoping there are more uses for mages that aren't casting spells.
My mage had the best reach weapon I could find, for when I didn't want to use all the energy of a spell but still wanted him to attack.
Or I gave him the bombs.
I'd frequently had a spell set outside of battle, to just cast it as soon as I saw something, but having it as the default for that mage would be kind of nice.

I definitely love the fact you need to click the proper runes to activate a spell, because I (apparently?) also love panicking, fumbling up my clicks, and fizzling right into a "Game Over" screen. Probably something wrong with me that way . I do hope that there are more utility spells like the "blue light special" spell. A heal spell would likely be asking too much, but dodge or blinding spells could be a lot of fun.
