Stuck on level 6 trapdoor / Westernmost scroll

On level 6 I went down a trapdoor, found a scroll that says "Westernmost" and a door that won't open. I've tried putting the scroll down in the western most square, looked for buttons, standing patiently, urinating, but nothing. I've even been down the next pit where I collected a nice helmet, but that was it. Can't seem to do anything with the blasted scroll or get the door open. Any hints?

The scroll is a hint to something on the floor you found it on but which can't be reached from it. You need to find a different way to go westward on this floor.

Thanks mate! What a pain that one was! Still not sure what to do with my reward but - eh, I'll just keep it for now.

The "Mage entrace" part, at the bit with the many trapdoors - the most westerly trapdoor - jump in, you'll get a crab to fight with and some "treasure".
