One pit on level 7 will take you through level 8 and down to level 9 (the pit past the first two trials where one party member says to be careful). From there you can go up the stairs up to level 8 and open the secret door to the mage responsibility quote you mentioned. The button for the secret door is just west of it.

Some books are usable for character bonuses, others contain instructions for the summoning spells in Eria's library.

To those who were willing to try my mod, thanks for the feedback! I've posted v1.8, which fixes the level 7 dialogue typo and makes level 8 a little more challenging (now you have to learn about Eria's work, hint, hint...). I'm uploading the source now.

Try as I might, I can't get it uploaded to Steam. If a kind soul would care to (or could walk me through it), I'd be grateful. My LoG is the gog.com version; I don't know if that's the problem or not.

It's at least the size of the file. Steam workshop has a limit of 100 MB per mod.

The poem is the key to it all...

Specifically, the number 7. If you number the row of buttons on the wall 1-5 from left to right, choose ones that add up to 7 (1,2,4).

The buttons above and below reset the puzzle and launch the bolts. Reset it, push the correct buttons, and launch, and voila.

It's not really important.

The plates open the doors, so when a skeleton spawns it can free itself. It was part of Kaefin's ability to impose the curse. You can put things on the plates to prevent this...or you can just skip it. It's just a bonus XP/equipment area and the note provides a little bit of backstory.
