Re: Does magic skill increase spell damage?
It occurs to me that the character's level and the character's mana pool/energy should probably also be played with when running tests of this sort, since either of them could easily be linked to spell damage in various ways.

Both char level and mana pool size are not linked to spell damage.Neutronium Dragon wrote:It occurs to me that the character's level and the character's mana pool/energy should probably also be played with when running tests of this sort, since either of them could easily be linked to spell damage in various ways.
Re: Does magic skill increase spell damage?
If somebody is still interested in this, I ran some test adding points through the console and repeatedly casting Fireburst on a group of 4 armored undead, with fire skill of 4, 23,24 and 50, 20 tests for each.
Skill 4: average 23.3 (min. 16, max. 31, next biggest 30)
Skill 23: average 32.65 (min. 23, max. 50, next biggest 42)
Skill 24: average 34.15 (min. 23, max. 68, next biggest 44)
Skill 50: average 47.25 (min. 32, max. 74, next biggest 62)
(I included the next biggest values since the highest ones could be critical hits)
So I'd say that Greater Fireball at 24 doesn't have any effect on Fireburst, but total skill points should give an increase up tp 100% of base damage.
Also, Fire skill doesn't affect spell cost (always 15 energy), nor Spellcraft does, unless it's maxed (same at 10 and 49).

Thanks,
This is good to know.
Did you notice if the different spells all used 15 energy?

Re: Does magic skill increase spell damage?
I didn't check other spells. Anyway I ran another test with frostbolt, and it could be a bit more complicated than I thought. 20 tests at skills 13, 23 and 24, these were the results:
Column A/B/C are damages at skills 13/23/24. In columns A1/B1/B2 I corrected the criticals (one x3 critical in B1, two x2 criticals in C1). In columns A2/B2/C2 are the base damages without the bonus of the skill. Last numbers at the bottom are averages for the three sets (first row A/A1/A2, etc.).
I would have expected similar values for A2 and B2 (average damage minus bonus for skill), since I expected a 2% bonus for each point in Ice Magic, but average base damage is still higher for a skill of 23 than a skill of 13 (27.26 vs 25.56).
Anyway Improved Frostbolt seems to give a bonus of 20-25% over regular Frostbolt, I don't know if the critical chance is the same.

Re: Does magic skill increase spell damage?
Sorry to dredge up an old thread, but it doesn't seem clear. Does spell damage improve with skills invested beyond the greater bolt stage in any schools? I.e. will frost bolt or ice shard increase in power beyond 24 (improved frostbolt)?
Does anyone know how much per skill point?

Re: Does magic skill increase spell damage?
Each point into the elemental skills improves spell damage as you can see in a post further up this page.mr_raider wrote:Sorry to dredge up an old thread, but it doesn't seem clear. Re: Does magic skill increase spell damage?
Okay so I have a question related to magic and have no idea where to put it and I didn't want to open a new topic just for this.
So did poison cloud always inflict paralysis? I am modding and just found that it has a chance to paralyse you. Was this in some patch or something or was I just blind this entire time, not noticing?
edit: I figured it out. It was a mod (dragons) I added to my dungeon that did this and some other unwelcome stuff too.

Re: Does magic skill increase spell damage?
if you use flame dart (or whatever the 3rd lvl spell is called), the damage does not increase, i've noticed. therefore, probably, there is no damage modifier as you level up except where noted.
