[Linux] Would grimrock work on my PC?

Post by jibanes »

Specs:
Debian linux 6.0.6
x86 (via c3) @1.2Ghz
1GB RAM
Via Unichrome video card (32MB, shared with RAM)

I know it's no longer a "killer rig" but it works well and it's quiet, so I don't really need to upgrade it.

Thank you.

I'll assume the specs needed are about the same in Linux and Windows. LoG actually ran better on Windows for me (on the same machine) but I guess that's mostly because of the drivers. If that's correct, then your computer doesn't have what it takes. I guess it could run even with your 1 GB of RAM (Maybe if you turn off some stuff) but the processor is so much below the minimum required that I don't think it will work. Is it a Pentium 3? And I don't know that graphic card so I can't tell about that.

(taken from steam (on windows of course))
Minimum:
OS:Windows XP Service Pack 3
Processor:Dual Core 2GHz Intel or 2.8GHz AMD
Memory:2 GB RAM
Graphics:ATI Radeon X1600 or NVIDIA GeForce 7600 or better (256MB graphics memory or more. Shader Model 3.0 needs to be supported). Minimum supported resolutions 1280x720 and 1024x768.
DirectX®:9.0c
Hard Drive:1 GB HD space
Sound:DirectX 9.0c compatible

Recommended:
OS:Windows Vista or Windows 7
Processor:Quad Core 2.66GHz Intel or 3.2GHz AMD
Memory:4 GB RAM
Graphics:Graphics card supporting OpenGL 2.1 or later. ATI Radeon HD 2900 or NVIDIA GeForce 8800 or better. Shader Model 3.0 needs to be supported)
DirectX®:9.0c
Hard Drive:1 GB HD space
Sound:DirectX 9.0c compatible

Unfortunately your specs seem to be well below the minimum requirements so the game probably won't work on your computer. The graphics card needs to support OpenGL 2.1 or newer so the odds are that the game wouldn't even start. :(

Antti, was with the recent 1.3.7 update the 2.1 opengl requirement not dropped for the low spec mode?

well, if wikipedia is right the unichrome is a S3 ProSavage 4 which is a design from before 2000... unlikely to work or provide the power :/
there is some old tech demo you could test: http://www.atomicgamer.com/files/95753/ ... est-v1-0-4

Overall, I'm curious what is the oldest card Grimrock will run on, so report please back ;)

The 2.1 OpenGL requirement was only dropped from the Windows version which now uses DirectX for both rendering modes. OpenGL 2.1 is still required for Mac and Linux.

Does it mean the game would run on Pixel Shader 2.0 now?

No, pixel shader 3.0 is still required by the DirectX renderer.

it might if they updated the s3 video drivers in linux to support open gl 2.1 even as software it could quit possibly load. Even old intel 945/965s granted they did support open gl latter editions and there absoult shite cards can pull it off if it does work Do not expect seller performance. I tried to pull up your card as far as linux drivers goes in a few of the repo's the last comments i can see based off the card is open gl 1.6

Pixel shading refers to a feature of the card. Open GL and Direct X are rendering platforms. Windows Uses MS propitiatory Direct X rendering platform where Open GL is ran on everything else. As far as Shading goes. Both support Pixel shading but in different languages Direct X object oriented rendering Open gl C level language. Your card would still have to support The function it called in Direct X language or OGL language. If the card does not support it it wont run regardless of which render platform you are using.
