Yeah, it's the astral dreadnought alright (and the monster is owned by the same company that owns the beholder - Wizards of the Coast) though that's probably isn't an issue for a free mod creation (though I'm not up on my US copyright laws). :?:

And Dungeons and Dragons (at least 3rd ed and before) IS the Dungeon Crawler my friend! It pretty much started it all and the gaming world would be a much different place without it (no Eye of the Beholder, no Pools of Radiance, no Baldur's Gate, no Neverwinter Nights) ;)

well i got the bloody thing ingame as a static prop, (but that was all i could achieve) it looks pretty solid. (check images over at nexus). also maybe if someone picks up on animating this monster it would be best to give it its own thread (so as not to clog up the monster thread) also to anyone interested in the static prop of the monster just gimme a holler and i'll send it over. ( i so hope that someone can animate this!) :)

Just my 2 cents on the beholder licensing thing: there are many many games with beholder-like creatures which didn't pay any kind of royalties to WoTC (or SSI or whatever was the rights-holder at the time), just think of Ultima's gazers or Doom's cacodemons.
I guess the big points are
1) not using the name "beholder" in any way ever (as it probably is trade-marked and is likely the most important thing - WoTC doesn't want a monopoly in big-floating-meatballs, they want being associated with the coolest monster around when it is named in geek mythology)
2) have enough different details in its design (colour, number of eyestalks, function of the central eye, etc.). A floating eye is hardly original, they don't own that concept. They own the one where the eye is a chaotic-evil aberration with 10 eyes shooting each one a specific ray and with a central eye projecting an anti-magic zone etc. etc., however.

The same I think applies to Illithids (Mind Flayers) as the concept of monsters with tentacles on their face is older than RPG gaming by centuries (besides, Goromorgs are quite similar). Even the concept of eating the brain going through the nose is actually quite some million years old (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naegleria_fowleri - do not read if you are easily impressed)

IANAL of course.

this is the link to the download for this monster on free 3d models website

as far as animation goes basic movement and attack anims will suffice (to breath life into this monstrosity) all other effects and attacks are scripted anyway. and considering your previous work i wish i could animate as "badly" ;) as you can. the download include all necesary files (textures, model, rigged for animation model all in 3dsmax format) i wager the best kind of movement for this creature would be a mixture of slug motion combined with a torso attack. i hope this is enough info to obtain the creature model (links) and i hope that you get it to work, also i would like to thank you for taking time out of your buisy schedule to attend time and skills to help the comunity in such wonderous ways. p.s. those new screenshots of wip leech and ratfolk are amazing you sir are a genius. in kind regards odinsballs :D
