So far I am cloning the in-game materials, and sometimes editing the dif to change the colour a bit. But otherwise my modified materials use the original specular and normal maps.

Perhaps it is because I am using too many objects inside one model? I've been combining a bunch of items all into one file for the thing I am working on.
