[CLOSED] Call to modders/mappers: "One Room" round robin!

Post by SpiderFighter »

Things have been slowing down a bit here, and I need something to shake the cobwebs out of my own work, so I thought it would be fun to do a quick map together.

The idea is simple: Create a map together where each designer creates only one room (don't write this off right away; you can do a lot in one room). Rules are:
  • Sign up below if interested, and PM me your email (so I can send you the file). We will progress in the order of signup.
  • To keep us from compromising each other's puzzles, your room must have at least two separate halls attached (one leading in, one out). You may add any hallways you like from another hallway (not from another designer's room), but only one room.
  • You may add any locks or doors connecting to any existing hall (as long as you provide the keys, plate, lever, and so on, to open it), but you may not add, subtract, or in any way modify another designer's room or its contents.
  • You may add any items, entities, or monsters to hallways.
  • You may add any new content you'd like. You may do anything you'd like. It's your room!
  • Keep it playable. This is a one-off, so we shouldn't see any ogres (unless there's a clever way to kill it, or it's part of a non-confrontational puzzle).
  • Place a text somewhere in your room with your name on it (you can hide it if you'd like)
  • Once you are finished with your section, export it and run it from within the game to make sure everything is working, and also to make sure that your section is working as intended (remember though, that you are sending the raw files back to me, not the exported map.). At the very least, any problems that may arise from not running a proper test slows down our progress and prevents another mapper from doing a proper test of his area.
  • When you are done with your room, email it back to me and post in this thread, so the next person can get ready. Please list any custom assets you have added, so that we can keep track. If your name is coming up and you're going to be busy/out of town, etc. please let us know so we can adjust the list.
  • Try to have your part done within 72 hours after receiving it, so we can keep this going (quicker is better, of course). If everyone's game, we can have another go-around (two or three rounds would be nice, but we'll decide once we see how many have signed up and how long the first round takes).
  • FIrst person to shout out "Entrance room" gets to do it (I don't want to do the first room, but will if no one specifically wants it). -claimed by Neikun
  • Unless this thread has [CLOSED] in the title, it's still going, and you can jump on in! - 30/10/2012 - We have hit twenty designers, which seems to be a good, round number for this particular map. If you are interested in joining, PLEASE post in here, and we'll start another round after this one is complete. Thanks!
That's it! I'll keep updating this post with the list of contributers. This will be fun, fast, and when we're done we'll have a cool little community mod with plenty of surprises!

I'd like to have a go. I've not used the editor much but I think I can manage one room. ;)

I'll do one room.

But I have questions :D

Q: Is there any size limit to the room ?

Q: If my room design can't fit into the current level since I was later in the line, can I staircase down and continue from there ?

hmm... sounds fun. You can count me in. 8-)
And btw, can the room contain any custom assets (lighting, items etc.)?

Wow...it's great to see so many jump on board already!

I'll add you all to the original post, and say welcome aboard!

Right now, Neikun is doing the first room, and should be done this evening. Grim will get it next, and we're off and running!

To answer some questions:

  • "You may add any new content you'd like. You may do anything you'd like. It's your room!"
What we're doing is compressing the entire dungeon directory (including the mod_assets sub-directory) so that there will be no need to add custom assets that have already been used prior to your turn (You are welcome to add any custom assets that aren't already in place when the files get to you.) For example, Neikun is first up, so I'm sure all of his custom alcoves will already be in place for the rest of us to use. :) When each person is done, they will zip (or .rar) it up and send it back to me, and I'll send it to the next person in line. This is so that I can keep archives of each version (just in case something "breaks" along the way), and also so that everyone's email addresses aren't all over the place.

As long as it's playable and doesn't kill the frame rate, I don't see the need to limit room size (unless everyone disagrees; I'm certainly open to suggestions). Just keep in mind (as a general rule) that the larger the room, the less focussed it is. In any case, you're only fourth in line, so I'm sure you'll have room to build. I'f you'd like to throw stairs in and continue on another level that's fine, but I think we should limit ourselves to two floors for now, so we don't end up with ten floor of one room each. Don't worry about adding stairs back up, just place a hall out of the room and let the next designer(s) decide whether to continue on that floor or not.
