how about a concise tutorial to help us

Post by gamefanatic »

I've been a game player for some 30 years now. Yes I'm that old! But the idea of game modding to me is very new. Back in 'the day' I would type games in from magazines and generally played it as is. Now we have the ability to mod our games and learning to do this for me is both a thrill and a challenge. The thrill comes from coming up with an idea and seeing it work. The challenge is working with the game tools to make it work. The problem for me is figuring out how to get from A to B without alot of trial and error.

So I would like to see a concise textbook style learning tool where there is explanation, maybe assignments that we can do and share along with each other as we learn. I'm more of a textbook kind of guy where I learn best by learning the concepts and applying them.

So how about it community. How about the developers or users putting together a set of lessons from the basics to the advanced topics so we all can learn and share.

P.S. I don't mean to minimize the work Komag and others have done. It's just the information is scattered at best and references are good once you learn the concepts not the other way around (in my humble opinion)

Thanks.

It just so happens that a wiki is in progress.
I think it will be just what's needed for modders of all skill levels.

Komag's introduction videos are quite good! They start here:

There are 8 videos in total. Be sure to turn on annotations starting with the 2nd video to catch a couple minor corrections.

The videos should help you learn the basics, and I recommend pausing them a lot and actually doing everything I show, step by step, so you can replicate it yourself.

The new wiki will also contain lots of condensed tutorials you can follow along with.

Then all the reference material will become more accessible :)

I'm thinking more of assignments

Post by gamefanatic »

Thanks people. This community support is great.

I looked at several of Komags' tutorials and to be sure he is a great narrator and teacher. I had no problem following along and his first tutorial got me brave enough to try my hand at the editor.

I'm thinking more in lines of a Word document that we can collect together lessons, assignments i.e. problems or challenges to test our mettle. If no one wants to do this it's OK it's just an idea. A wiki should help some I think if it is in a printable format so I have it in front of me as a reference rather than flipping from a wiki screen to the editor screen (yuk). I have little experience with game editors namely for Dungeon Siege 1 (which I gave up on) and NeverWinter Nights (the best one I've seen).

So how about some ideas of how we can disseminate the information and let's begin from the beginning.

I'm still working on my dungeon room by room. Thinking up new stuff as I go. BTW as a project someone could possibly model a treasure chest and piles of gold. I used a box for my treasure and it just doesn't look good.

Ohh okay. I understand what you mean now.
I wonder if that's something we could do on the wiki as well.
