I Likes Them Big

Post by fantompencil »

New to the forum so apologies if this has been posted before...

Is there any way to increase the area of each dungeon level beyond the 32x32 grid size..? Or is this too hard-coded into the game engine to change?

If it's not, are there any plans to enable modders to increase - or even decrease - the size of their dungeon levels? I think it would make for some epic dungeon crawls..! (and enable us to recreate some old paper D&D adventures in the Grimrock Stylee..!) I think this would be a fine addition to a fantastic dungeon editor - anyone else agree..? :D

I think you can have a limitless amount of floors, is that not good enough? :o
One problem that would be encountered with increasing the grid would be the way it fits on the in game map.

one idea:

try to make them on different levels, but instead of using stairs, use invisible and silent teleporters... it could work...

Indeed. Teleporters can be toggled to flash the screen.

Thanks for the thoughts, Dungeonmasters..!

What I'm thinking of doing is a way to convert some ancient tabletop rpg maps to Grimrock, from the golden age of D&D, T&T, and other Initial-Squared games. And some of these maps were printed on grids exceeding the 32x32 limit that the GDE can handle.

I never thought of slicing the dungeons up and putting them on different levels, and the idea of sneaky invisible teleporters connecting them is a good one. Although, after a little tryout in the Editor, it looks like you'd need to put the teleporter 4 squares from the edge of the map to maintain the illusion of being in an infernally long corridor running the length of the kingdom.

A decent enough workaround in theory, but with the potential to limit your map to 28x28..! :D (depending on the size of the dungeon in the first place. And if you're mad enough to map the Temple of Elemental Evil... Or Greyhawk Beneath...)

And I was going to see how this worked out, but then the editor crashed..! Hey Ho.

Bigger levels would require rewriting the automap so it will probably never happen. Sorry!

I remember some D20 book called "The 100 Level Dungeon" or something like that, crazy thing that was, it supposedly used "every monster in the monster manual"

you need only capture the spirit to be successful.
