Periodic crashes in Dungeon Editor (solved)

Post by Edsploration »

Edit: This problem was fixed in version Beta-1.2.10. Thanks!!

As far as I can tell this particular issue is only affecting me, so it may not be caused directly by LoG, but I am running out of ideas as to a fix.

It seems the editor crashes whenever I have a dungeon loaded for about 20 minutes, regardless of whether I am actually doing anything with it or not.

Windows spits out the following:
Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: BEX
Application Name: grimrock.exe

I'm running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit with DirectX 11

I'm letting the Dungeon Editor run in the background now with sound and music muted in game options to see if that has any effect. --Scratch that, it still crashes.

These points may be unrelated but extra information can't hurt:
This issue started after a case of testing from the Dungeon Editor where I had placed two receptors which would return fire spells at each other until a solid beam of death was formed. Walking into said beam of death crashed the (already laggy) game. Since that crash the editor crashes on its own while not doing anything as long as a dungeon is loaded.

Even more recently, just in the past couple hours, when LoG crashes Steam believes it's still running and refuses to reopen LoG or close Steam. I have to crash my way out of Steam just to run LoG again.

All these issues are really dropping my productivity with the editor, so I'd really appreciate any help resolving them even if LoG turns out not to be the culprit.

Do you have an AMD CPU?

Googling for XAudio2_7.dll_unloaded crash issues suggests either that it's related to AMD CPUs somehow or audio drivers in general. Someone even suggested unplugging USB headset to fix the problem. It's just one of these things, I suppose.

Thanks for going out of your way coming up with those suggestions Sol_HSA! Unfortunately I'm still struggling for a fix despite all that.

I have an i5 2500K CPU, so that's probably not it. I tried both the speaker and headset outputs as you said. I tried multiple audio drivers including the newest available. No dice. My motherboard is a Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 with onboard Realtek ALC889 codec.

My next plans are to see if I can run things with no audio drivers, older directx versions (if possible), and weed through any possible software conflicts. I just need to find what makes a difference.

I found one discussion that described almost exactly the same circumstances: that error message, 20 minutes, etc. Different application. Their solution was to switch from xaudio to directsound, but LoG doesn't offer that option (as far as I know, anyway).

XAudio2_7.dll belongs to the libraries that get installed with DirectX. Maybe your library is damaged which results in theses crashes. I would try deleting that library in the windows folders and then run an update of DirectX to get a new version installed.

DirectX is tricky and affects a lot of stuff - a tuneup of your DirectX install is probably a good idea

Well I tried removing the dll in question, reinstalling it, and also doing a complete fresh directX install. No effect. It doesn't seem like an earlier version of directX (10 or so) is even an option on Windows 7.

Do you still have the link to it? Maybe I could learn something by reading it. I'm not sure switching to directsound would fix my case though considering the Dungeon Editor shouldn't be rendering sound without even testing a dungeon, and muting the sound in game options didn't work. That and removing the Xaudio file entirely makes no difference. (Maybe the game is trying to reach that file and can't?) I'm willing to try anything I haven't yet.

I've been trying other games lately and they all run fine.

The one positive of this is I've gotten in the habit of saving my mod after every single change :D

I have this exactly same crashing happening to me. It's quite tedious to reboot LoG/Dungeon Editor every 20min or so. As this is the only game with the problem, I haven't been arsed to update or try anything special to fix this. My PC-specs if needed:

*Core i7 920 @ 2.67GHz
*6GB DDR3
*nVidia GTX 560 Ti
*Window 7 Ultimate 64bit
