After playing the game to completion I can only say that this is not true. Did you play to the end without injury? Did you complete the game without a death in the party(?); without four deaths?
I died exclusively during ambushes with multiple enemies, even on my first playthrough. Actually on my second playthrough I only died once or twice close to the end of the game because I was careless. Simply because I could take precautions since I knew where and when the ambushes would take place. If my life would depend on it I'm sure I would be able to beat the game without losing a single party member.

Still, combat with multiple enemies is fine, you need some good reflexes and a good overview over your surroundings (and of course a good party) to survive. And that's not what I'm complaining about. It's the 1 vs 1 fights I don't like since they're a waste of time. Started playing through the game with Toorum on hard and the problem became even more obvious to me when I had to circle some enemies for a minute or more before they would die. Doing that is neither dangerous nor exciting (and certainly not a glorious battle), it's repetitive and boring.

I felt the combat and difficulty was spot on, just right. Plenty of differing circumstances to make fighting harder for one reason or another here and there, plenty of interesting different monsters with different tactics. Plus, there will obviously be some players who are super action twitch hardcore gamers for whom this stuff will be easy - oh well, they are not everyone

I honestly don't consider this a flaw, or a problem. IMO no single encounter with a lone [common] entity should pose a serious threat to the party. I don't consider them a waste of time; I consider them an impediment (and/or food)... One that can be dealt with in ideal circumstances ~yet that can become a danger if handled carelessly/ lightly, or ignored.

In EoB, the zombies were never a threat, but they would slowly creep up on you, and if you were not careful, you'd find yourself surrounded ~even then your cleric (if you had one) could turn them away... but eventually they would creep back. Part of the risk in the game is getting -blocked into a corner and/or being attacked from more than one side (since you may only attack from face-front.) In general I find it good overall that the combat is more one of attrition than 1:1 deathmatches at every turn.

My suggestion would be keeping "DM-like" skill leveling. (usage = increases)

Not sure I like the XP format. Taking the skilled trait seems mandatory for character advancement.

Its set right now to allow one skill to hit the top, perhaps more room once extra content is around ...

Some builds require quite a bit of skill splitting, others almost none. Just my 2 cents
