Story about 4 insectoid mages

Post by Orthocone »

Hm, I'm thinking about a strange thing (inspired by Sir Tawnis story here). Even if I know the game only up to level 6, I'm planning a public story about a party of 4 insectoids. But before I start this project, I want to know : Would you like to read something like that ? As mentioned earlier my native language is not english and writing a story is a bit tricky for me. Comments and Criticism are welcome. They are like water in the desert. Silence is deadly for my fantasy.

I don' t want to write a book, it's a story with screenshots. I have to find out, if there is a feature in this game to create them all in a special directory with different filenames during a gaming session. And I have to find out how to show them here. I don't have much time this weekend (I need an "Intro", too), so I plan to start my story at the 30.8.

I promise, there is no cheat and no reload. You'll read about the party sufferings (if I make mistakes) and you'll read about their winnings (if I'm a genius  ). If they die all, the story ends. But from what I know about the game, it should be possible to reach level 6 ;) . So the story should not be too short ......

So, what say you?

I would like to read a story about the lives of four insectoids trying to survive in mount grimrock. You have my support with this idea.

I am interested in knowing what you have planned for skill distribution and if you have thought about which weapons to use on your front and back rows.

Nice idea. I'm on it!
For the screenshoot, if you have the Steam versione simply press F12 and, at the end of thje game sessione, you can choose your favorite pics and save'em. If you do not have the steam versione i suggest FRAPS (a small and simple propgram to record and take picture while playing).

Well the PRINT SCREEN should do the trick to (then just paste into your favorite photo program; or into PAINT if you don't have one) - and paste!

I think that Orthocone will not simply use printscreen, but screens some pics while playing without alt-tabbing/ending the gameplay.

Right. That's what I want. I found "Screen Captor", a tool that works well as it seems. This board hasn't a tool to load up pictures directly from HD, has it? So I'm forced to look for a picture hoster. What do you say? ImageShack ? Or is there a better one?

Back to my project:
I was 2 days at the North Sea and I had some good Ideas for the beginning. Now I must translate them and I hope you enjoy it. If my translations are too strange please let me know. I'll write the story in a different color to separate it from our comments. I thought about that insectoid party and I IMO it'll work well. There are two things I'm afraid of :

1. The pits. In my current game I often fell close to enemies. That was not that hard because I had two minotaurs with good protection in the front row. But I'm curious how insectoids can survive these falls with immediate combats.

2. The screenshots. To show some action I'll have to find a good mix between creating the pictures and surviving the game. Of course the party is the most important part of the story so don't be too disappointed if I can't show pictures of every dangerous fight.

As mentioned Ill start the game next weekend. Wish me luck to climb down Mt. Grimrock as far as possible.

Edit:
Is there a directory for the save-files ? Even if I found none, I hope there is. I do not want to loose the progress only because the game crashes and there was a need to re-install it.

Prologue

I open my eyes. All I see is a flickering torch close to a gate. Where am I? And suddenly I remember. I remember a trial. Me and my followers were send to Mt. Grimrock to recieve forgiveness. My followers? Where are they? Forgiveness? For what? What have we done?

Slowly but surely my memory returns.

We were hungry. We stole from a farmer. We ate. Suddenly there were soldiers everywhere. My first reaction was to fight them with magic. But then I surrender because they were too many. We couldn't kill all of them. We couldn't win. The Weakskins kill everyone who kills one of them. So we were catched and brought to law. The condemn us. But they said our deeds will be forgiven. They brought us to the top of this mountain. Then they pushed us into the hole. We felt into darkness. An endless darkness. I remember my thoughts that nothing could save us. I even remember that I regret it during the fall not to have wings.

*Tsk* *Tsk* *Tsk*.

Where's this noise from? It's me. I laugh. But then I am ashamed. I forgot something. My Followers. Oh Big Winged One, I need to gather my thoughts. I'm a leader. A leader always controls himself. Always!

I stand up and look around. I feel relieved. They are all lying in this cell, alive as it seems. Beside them another strange thing catches my eye. A book with empty pages and a magic pen, not far away. Who brought it here? Did they throw it into the hole of Mt. Grimrock? If yes, why? I don't know. But that's of no importance. The one and only crucial thing is to find a way out. To escape from this cavern. Old stories come back to me. Old stories about Grimrock. None of the prisoners thrown in there were ever seen again. I never believed this. But now I'm here. I feel fear. But I'm the leader. I can't accept this feeling. It's wrong.

I examine my followers. They still need some time to regain consciousness. So I sit down. I take the book. I think about it. I think about a story about four heroic insectoids fighting their way through the mountain. It would be great to let the Weakskins know that Insectoids could be heroes. That members of my race are capable of doing things the others can't. That Insectoids could be a part of great history. So I open the book. I take the pen. And I start writing. I'm not very got at this but I hope my story will made it through the exit of this lair. It must, because only then we're alive.

At first I want to let the world know who we are.

I am L'Oudh'Yss Krks the Strong and a potent fire mage. The call me strong because I like fighting with blades too. They are good. You can kill animals with blades and cook them with fire. It's perfect. It's harmony.

I'm the first. For those who don't know how important that is, I explain it. The strongest always hatches first. So the first is always the leader. It is the first law of the Big Winged One. Ever heard of her? The Big Winged One is our origin. She is our keeper. She is everything for us.

In your language L'Oudh'Yss Krks means something like Dark Mirror. I will call myself so in this story because no Weakskin was able to speak our names. But they don't try and they don't care. In their world there are no Insectoids. But after we return, they have to learn our names from us. They have to show respect. We're heroes then.

The second is B'or Iskk Zrk. Translated is means Iron Skin. That is because no one ever damaged his scales. Not even with a hammer. He once fought against a minotaur. He won. He ist an air mage because he says he likes thunder. He likes the glare of lightning too. It makes him happy. He says it reminds him of the energy of life.

The third is Lor'tis'sk, a female. That means Coldblood. She named herself so because she likes water. She likes ice. She likes cold killings. She is one of the few of our race who can swim. Hopefully there is no need to swim here. I can't swim. But I'm the leader. A leader is capable of everything. So my followers mustn't know my weakness. They'll lose their faith in me.

The fourth is T'Inok Chrk, which means Four Eyes. He hatched below earth and he has a great talent for earth magic. Watching enemies slowly dying from poison is one of his favorites. He's the strangest of us. He needs a strong leader. He needs me.

I hear a noise. I turn around. My followers wake up. That's good. We can't stay here for a long time. We have nothing. No food, no weapons, no clothes. Even insectoids wear clothes. It's part of our culture. I hope we can find something here in the dungeon. Our magic is strong but we can't do everything with it. We can kill, we can protect us. But we can't heal our wounds.

At first we search the room and Coldblood finds a loose stone. We press it and a secret chamber opens. We find a Shuriken and some boots. Lurker boots, it seems. They are good. I take them. They're mine. I give the shuriken to Coldblood. After she hatched she throwed many different things at everyone. She is good in throwing things. Now she can prove it to be a useful skill. In the secret chamber there is also a statue. Who is this strange person? What race ? We don't know. It has some tentacle growing out of his face. We never heard or read about such a race. Is that's the way the builders of this dungeon look like ? Maybe we'll learn about them.

We walk to the gate. There are writings near it. The writing says : "Take the light or die in this cell. It's your choice." We'll take the light. It's not good to die now. There is no such thing as a good time to die. Never.

Four Eyes takes the torch and the gate opens.

Not far away we see a skeleton lying in an alcove. It is a skeleton of a Weakskin. Why did he die here if taking the torch opens the gate? Why didn't he try to leave? It's strange. But it's not important. Only we are important.

We're on our way. We must win. We MUST!!

1. For English not being your native language, you write better than many Americans that I know.
2. I love this story! It feels like a walk through told as a story! Excellent touch!
