Arx Fatalis

Post by isamu »

Has anyone played Arx Fatalis? I installed and played it for a few minutes but it's a very old game and it shows. Graphics look like it came right out Quake II, and controls are cumbersome to to say the least. Heard it's a wonderful dungeon crawler though, but I don't get that feeling upon playing it right now. How does it compare to Grimmy and other DCs out there?

Think I played around 6-10 hours (been so long I can't remember). I found it really mediocre in the beginning but once you get to the first big city thing it really picks up. Unfortunately my HDD crashed at that point and the saves were lost, so I never bothered to go back and play it again.

I haven't but I heard good things about it. It's been on the list of get around to play at some point for a long time!

Arx Fatalis is one of the best first person RPG's I've ever played; both mechanically and artistically.
(It also has the best walk & jump of any FPP game I've played.)

Arx-Libertatis is still bugged, but very playable, and corrects existent bugs in the 1.21 version Arx Fatalis that GoG sells. The main point of the mod is for better compatibility with modern graphics hardware; and it really works.

I believe so, and maybe more eventually...

From the ArxWiki: http://arx.parpg.net/

What is the project goal of Arx Libertatis.

Our goal is to update and improve Arx Fatalis to bring it up to par with modern implementations of similar games - see the Mission statement for details. Before the first release, our focus has been on porting the game and fixing issues with modern operating systems, but we plan to do more in the future.

Although I was personally able to get Arx to run on Win7 64bit, It is easier and looks MUCH better running in Arx Libertatis; providing, of course, you already have a copy of Arx Fatalis.
