Complete crash on load
Complete crash on load
Everytime I try to run LoG, it gets to the gear, waits a few moments, and then the screen flickers slightly and shifts to vertical lines. This is from a clean bootup, and with a cold graphics card. I tried downgrading, upgrading, and even going to the preview beta versions of my graphics card. Nothing seems to work for me as of yet.
The odd thing is, is that during the preview build of the game that they had us test, everything worked fine. If anyone has any further suggestions please let me know.
Win7 Ultimate
Intel Core i7 920 2.67ghz
9GB DDR3 Ram
ATI Radeon HD 4850 1GB (current) driver version: 8.951.0.0
Any other information requested let me know. I'd love.. love to play this game finally.

Re: Complete crash on load
after 4 driver wipes, and completely changing all my settings several times, the only way to get the game to run was to actually take everything out of the games control and set all the AA settings etc to their max values independent of application control.
Ugh.
Ugh.
Re: Complete crash on load
Interesting. I too had a complete crash on load. After a reformat, the game worked fine for awhile. Now I can't load any of my saved games without causing a complete system failure. As in my system will completely shut down and wont allow me to turn it back on till its power light stops blinking, which takes about a minute - after I unplug the damn thing. I've never seen it do that before. I'm guessing that I'm having some kind of hardware failure, but I've played a lot of other games off steam without having any kind of strange behavior like this.
DXDIAG INFO:
DxDiag didn't find any hardware issues other than an unsigned driver. Nor anything odd in the Device Manager. I'm rather confused as to why I can't load saved games for just this game without causing massive system failure. Of course my computer seems to keep recovering from this, but I think I'm gonna have to uninstall Legend of Grimrock if this problem can't be solved.

Re: Complete crash on load
Huh, that is weird, I am using a simple ATI Radeon 4200 Chipset that came with this comp, way more sucky than both your graphics cards, and I can run the game mostly fine, and never had any problems other than floor 12 lagging even with settings all the way down. I have no idea what the problem could be.
Re: Complete crash on load
Intresting, maybe again a variant of the infamous GPU overheating and GPU stress effect of LoG (PSU brought to its limits?)?Javokis wrote:Interesting.
Have you checked with e.g. GPU-Z or mainbaord tools GPU and system temperature? If GPU temp is >70C° on idle optimize cooling first.
Maybe the PSU is on the limits (guessed by your powerdowns whcih could be causeed by under voltage surges detected by the mainboard), downclocking of your GPU could help to track a problem there (viewtopic.php?f=12&t=2324&start=20#p27008).
Try to limit the maximum GPU-load (should be below 100%), can be checked with GPU-Z. To achieve that enable the FPS limiter in the grimrock.cfg to reduce GPU burden (see here how viewtopic.php?f=12&t=2574&start=10#p26796). Set the maxFrameRate in the grimrock.cfg to something significantly lower (30fps) then the (very high) preset of 120fps, enable also "debugInfo = true" (for shown FPS).
Hope this helps, please give feedback when you fixed your issue, thanks!
PS: sidenote, have an similar system, a AMD X2 4000 + ATI HD 3600 (benchmarked here viewtopic.php?f=12&t=2324&start=10#p26685)
Re: Complete crash on load
I have come to the conclusion that something is corrupting my progress. The game will load an early auto save from a new game I created, but a save I made of some tremendous progress is causing system lock up (where ctrl+alt+del wont even work). The game will run fine... if I don't load a saved game where significant progress has been made. This is turning into a game killer for me. I did try what you guys recommended. I did notice some additional things and took some additional precautions like:
Turned off "Graphics OverDrive" and set manual fan control to 50% in the ECC's performance control.
Still wont let me access my saved game in Legend of Grimrock. Maybe you guys can look over my save game... just be very careful. I'm hoping the game developers can also look at this save game and see if it's somehow corrupted. Here's the link:

Re: Complete crash on load
hmm, loads fine for me, you have an minoteur called "Nikolp" ... so, probably not corrupted. Beside, do you have version 1.1.4? Also, your systems lock-up should be beyond the power of application (even when corrupting save games), I still think you have an PSU and/or GPU problem. What is your actual temp. of GPU, how many FPS? How many Watt your PSU can provide, can you lower the Voltage shutdowm limits in the BIOS?Javokis wrote:I have come to the conclusion that something is corrupting my progress. Re: Complete crash on load
My PSU was top of the line when I bought it at newegg for 160 bucks. It's a Corsair HX620 watt with modular connectors, which is more than plenty of power for a single GPU configuration. I even isolated the circuits by separating the GPU power cables from everything else. It also has SLI certification and I dare say that this PSU will be the last thing that will die on this computer. The ECC has temperature readings for the GPU and maintained 57C during Legend of Grimrock gameplay - this is normal for all my games. I doubt at this point that my issue has anything to do with the graphics card or my PSU. I suspect it's something in the hard drive configuration plus OS drivers. I could even turn off my OC settings for the CPU...

EUREKA!
That was the problem. It appears that this game didn't like my current OC configuration. I turned down all my voltage settings as well as clock speeds for both FSB and my RAM. I can now load my saved games just fine, but the games performance on max is a different story...

great that you found the reason and a solution!Javokis wrote: EUREKA!

thanks for reporting back and have fun now with grimrock.
Re: Complete crash on load
It's kind of funny... and sad because my OC settings completely stabilize my other games like Fallout: New Vegas and Witcher 2 that actually suffer random crashes and slowdowns if I DON'T OC.
