Lack of support for Mac OS X / Linux
Re: Lack of support for Mac OS X / Linux
Step 1. Purchase Grimrock on Steam via OS X. This will download the game to:
~/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/The Legend of Grimrock
Step 2. Download the wrapper from here: http://portingteam.com/files/file/7283- ... -grimrock/
Step 3. Double click on the wrapper to launch it. Choose the option "Copy a Folder Inside" and browse to the path from Step 1. If you're running Lion or Mountain Lion, the library directory will be hidden. You can either make an alias to your Steam folder, make a short to it in your sidebar, unhide the library, or move the Grimrock directory to your desktop, etc. Regardless, point the wrapper to the folder.
Step 4. Quit the wrapper and then double click on the wrapper again. Done!

Just a tip to mac users running lion or later, to access the Library, first, go to your finder. Select Go from the top bar, then hold the option key and the icon should appear. You're welcome.

Yes lets waste dev time on an OS that 1% of users use... that's what ? 0.001 % of Grimrock players ? Oh and for the mac lovers... get yourself a real computer and stop worrying about the millions of non compatible applicationsrubensduarte13 wrote:+1 to a Linux release!

Not everyone wants to be a Windows slave. Enjoy your captivity.DJK wrote:Yes lets waste dev time on an OS that 1% of users use... that's what ? 0.001 % of Grimrock players ? please, no flame wars in the grimrock forum! ;PFreeBooteR69 wrote:Not everyone wants to be a Windows slave. (damn, can't hold myself... while a open source Windows would be preferable (hint: ReactOS), the windows desktop platform provides a higher degree of freedom for the end user than Apple (HW-SW bundeling, see this paper http://www.hbs.edu/research/pdf/09-030.pdf page 2) or the fragmented Linux ecosystem https://plus.google.com/109922199462633 ... gdeFDfRzNe Ingo Molnar: "Technology: What ails the Linux desktop? Part I. The basic failure of the free Linux desktop is that it's, perversely, not free enough. [...] They [distributions] are centrally planned, hierarchical organizations instead of distributed, democratic free societies.". So, to call this open, vast, agile application ecosystem a "slavery" neglectes the qualities of the open Windows/PC platform and ignores the significant problems and weaknesses of the competitors.)
Re: Lack of support for Mac OS X / Linux
Hi all,
I recently discovered this game and as an old Dungeon Master fan and nowadays a Mac user I ended up reading this thread. I was glad to see Jefferson's instruction on how to run the game on a Mac and thus I tried to follow the steps. However, I immediately run into trouble...
Is this something that I can override in the Steam client to get the files downloaded or am I doing something else wrong here? I have a feeling that there is a simple solution to my problem but I just can't figure it out. I also realize that I should probably direct my question to the Steam support team instead. Anyway, I would be very grateful receiving any hints or tips from you.
Regards,
Staffan

Us suggested by Jefferson I purchased the game from the Steam website and installed the Steam client on my Mac (I must admit that I am new to Steam). But instead of downloading the game the Steam client states that the game is not available on my current platform.Jefferson wrote:Step 1. Purchase Grimrock on Steam via OS X. That's weird, I have been using Windows since 3.1 and never have I felt to be in "captivity"... And the "its cool to hate MS thing" is soooo 2000... I always fail to see why anyone would trade a world of endless possibilities for a locked in ecosystem (in case of ios) and half-assed compatibility... (in case of mac)... Yes Win 8 will include a ARM version with a similar locked in ecosystem.... however there will also be a full fledged x86/64 compatible version that still runs all my trusty appz ... some of which ran fine all the way back to the Win 95 days.. can't say your Mac has that kind of compatibility (mostly as they changed chipset to intel after they figured out their custom made chips that the apple lovers soooo adored just didn't cut it )FreeBooteR69 wrote:Not everyone wants to be a Windows slave. Im pretty sure Apple wants to lock you in a lot more then Microsoft these days... but feel free to spout your Apple propaganda... maybe you can tell us that "apple's just don't get viruses" like (rip) Jobs ? Ofc we all know they do ever since the few outbreaks lately.... just that virus/malware creators usually target succesfull ecosystems and well Windows does happen to have 90% marketshare
But I wander... let's not go into a flamewar Apple users can't win
Re: Lack of support for Mac OS X / Linux
I think this thread has run its course.
In short:
Devs would like to see OS X and Linux versions out there. As well as other platforms, like iOS. But there's only so much you can do with the resources they have. Be patient.
