Custom Maps

Post by Zork »

Greetings, everyone! As an old-school RPG gamer, half the enjoyment of playing a game like The Legend of Grimrock is mapping the dungeon(s) without the assistance of an auto-map. So, I present my first few hand-made level maps for the community to critique (and correct if it be the case). I have taken much time to ensure their accuracy while making them visually appealing, as well. I have completed all the levels, but I won't post unless there is some real interest. My maps do not reveal puzzle solutions (one or two exceptions), nor indicate which switches operate which mechanisms; they do mark uncommon items and hidden rooms or passages. Of course, there are already many game sites offering complete map solutions, and my intent is not to compete. Instead, my efforts are more in the interest of a personal art project that has some utility for a terrific game (thank you, Almost Human!). I welcome any comments!

Level 3 really starts to illustrate my style and level of complexity. Some of the deeper levels are super ;)

Hey Zork,

Those are really nice maps! Good job. :)

I've moved this to Gameplay Hints.

Some comments after first glimpse:
1. On level 3, the room with Golden Chalice is missing I believe.
2. Also, on level 2, you haven't marked Sling which is important item at this stage as it is first Missile Weapon available in game.
3. Likewise, on level 3, you haven't marked Machete which is important item at this stage as it is first Sword available in game.

Speaking of weapons, have you considered using seven different icons for weapons types? I mean separate icon for sword, mace, axe, dagger, missile, throwing and staff/orb.

Thank you for the comments! You're correct about the missing Golden Chalice room, but it's on level 2; thanks to your keen eye, I can correct this important omission! Originally, I had intended to mark all objects in the game, but my tiles began to clutter with multiple items, wall decor, triggers, etc. I opted, then, to eliminate the common stuff. I agree, though, that if used as a guide by someone beginning the game, the maps might indicate those early common weapons. Also, to be honest, I am still undecided about whether to use token icons (e.g. a sword to represent all weapons) or more specific ones for each weapon type, garment, etc. I am not sure I can include too many now that I have my tile set in place; it's something that merits more experiments.

You got a private message from me.

@Topic:
I like what you have done here. What kind of tool do you/ did you use for drawing/ creating these maps?

All the best!
