Customization of Race, Class, and Traits.

Post by Kenji »

As we're all happy about the level editor and our ability to modify our own dungeons, I'm sure there are those out there would like to have the ability to create new races, classes, and traits.

For example,
SpoilerShow
after relieving Toorum's soul, you get to play him in the second play as a singleperson party with the special Ranger class.
I wonder if it is possible for us to modify the races and classes for other dungeons in the future with the editor?

Importing custom portraits is a small but fine step to making the game more personalized, perhaps implementing custom races, classes, and traits in the future for the modders will help the game prosper.

TL;DR
Have editors able to edit races, classes, and traits.

Don't hold your breath on this... unless the devs re-word their modding guidelines, this cannot be the kind of modding that is distributable. In order to mod anything related to classes, items, races, attributes, and spells, you would need to go into some of the vanilla game files, alter them, and then repost the altered vanilla LUA files -- which is not allowable under the guidelines as they are now.

A simple rewording of the guidelines in question, as well as the release of the LUA base code for classes, etc., would make modding these kinds of things very easy and not require a customized tool or editor to modify, BTW.

The Dev team seems interested in us making mods, but they're starting out careful. They're currently not supporting mods of any kind until the Editor has been released, which makes sense.

Once the Editor is released, they probably will look into things to see how they can support us making awesome mods, either by changing the guidelines, or by supporting some way for us to overrule the entries in the core lua files without having to ship the entire lua files along.

For now we should just be patient.

Thanks for the thoughts and discussion, I guess it is best for me to stay put and be patient.

It's just that the games with high flexibility on modding (Such as Mount & Blade, TES III+) are often driven continuously by the community and grow even when the development stopped.

I actually recently posted in the big editor thread here about how Taleworlds (Mount and Blade) grew from almost nothing into a successful developer because of flexibility with mods. You're right, Kenji -- it's been done before. I remember when Taleworlds was just one dude that knew some python coding -- the forum over there is now hosted in twelve different languages! :) There are SO MANY good mods for mount and blade -- mods that take the base game and warp it into something almost completely different -- it's like having a whole other game for free... and that's the draw, I think -- for the casual consumers. It's just Christmas presents. Who doesn't like presents? :)

And then there's guys like me who enjoy the modding process just as much as (or more than) playing the game itself. What can I do with this game engine? What can I accomplish? You even make friends doing collaborative projects... the list goes on and on. I'm a firm believer in the power of a good modding community -- it's how you get staying power as a developer in this day and age.

I think giving us the chance to add new races, classes and traits will let us expand/create our own series of dungeons; I've always thought fantasy games should have at least some form of an Elf class so giving us a chance to do that would be great.

Perhaps if the mod replaces the current races by Elves, Dwarves and Orcs, that could work. However, the Elf would appear quite peculiar next to the current races, which are all quite different from each other. The differences between a human and elf are only minor.

I wanted an Elven Mage so I just used Elf artwork and selected an Insectoid, perfect really. :)

Indeed. Races are fine. Want a different one, pick the race closest to it, and then change the port! xD
