[MOD] the warlock (maybe from firetop mountain)
[MOD] the warlock (maybe from firetop mountain)
I assume everybody's knows this wonderful book and I'm sure almost human has read the book several times before giving us their game jewel
infos here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Warloc ... p_Mountain
I think it could be nice to adapt the book to grimrock. a nintendo ds game exists as well, but I haven't play it.
here is a map of the actual dungeon (in french), as in the book:
it's a classical dungeon, with people living into it, monsters, traps, and some merchants.
off course, some traps/events have to be different (like the river, merchants, werewolf...), but I think we can make it. I haven't finish grimrock yet (lvl5 and taking my time and enjoy every step in this dungeon!) I don't know if there is warlock monster, or some of the monsters (as the dragon of the book) can be modded but for now I plan to make it with what we have, and just do the design of the dungeon itself. it could be very nice to have a dragon, but maybe it's too complicated to mod or to get it into these tiny halls...
some halls have to be added, to break linearity from the book, but you can get the idea of it!
so if you're interested into this "mod project" let me know here!

Re: warlock on firetop mountain
Funnily enough, I started converting this gamebook into a custom dungeon for RTC (Return to Chaos, a customisable Dungeon Master clone).
I gave up because I found that it was actually pretty boring. It's virtually impossible to make a linear, narration heavy gamebook into an exciting dungeon crawler. You end up having to change so much to make it exciting for the player, that it ends up bearing no relationship to the gamebook. You can actually download my demo if you like, it's just the first part of the map and unfinished:
http://dungeon-master.com/forum/viewtop ... 31&t=29267
You'll need the RTC game engine to play it:
http://ragingmole.com/RTC/
Note that it's an old-school engine: it only runs in 640x480 and emulates the old pixel style graphics. No fancy modern graphics to speak of...

Re: warlock on firetop mountain
yes, it's very linear in his original format. that's why I said "adaptation" as you said. the book is, after all, only a pretext to make a dungeon with a background. and I want to adapt it to grimrock background too. finally it's just a first step for jumping into the thing. I'll post a little storyline soon, based on the background we had in grimrock's manual... (please almost human team! give us more!!!)
I already decided to make a dungeon of five / six levels max. we will play with the traditional group of grimrock heroes and the traditionnal stuff too. I'm sure I can't make riddles like almost human team, but I'll try (when we'll have the editor )!
for now, I'm making the levels on gridpaper, it will draw a general view of the thing...
and I'm sure it can turn on a an exciting dungeon!

Re: warlock of firetop mountain
as the promised editor showed parts of his wonderful potential, my maps are almost finished on paper. I have a dozen traps ready too, and some population who's waiting at its entrance to go in. and levels goes now to 7/8!
the primal concept is safe, but it's a totally new adventure, set in grimrock's world. I will update this post as I go through the making of it.
so stay tuned!

Dude, I was justing wondering about these books! Not only this, but some of them, mainly deathtrap dungeon. That would be really cool
Re: warlock of firetop mountain
deathtrap dungeon is perhaps a good base for a grimrock dungeon, I have the maps too and with a little more inspiration, it could be a good start for a new dungeon... but for now, warlock on firetop mountain!

I'll look forward to this.

Re: warlock of firetop mountain
these books are sure good start point for designing levels for grimrock. of course they are much too simple for a game on computer, but they have good stories (for most) and the monsters are classical. ok we should need goblins, or trolls, and kobolds, but it doesn't stop the making of a mod... monsters are part of the riddles, but halls and rooms and traps and buttons and doors are the most important!
