I am in no way fast enough not to get poisoned, at least not with a keyboard/mouse over a wireless USB hub which must introduce a small delay. Either that, or I'm just getting old - but I didn't have trouble with DM or CSB when I played recently. Oh well, I'm still surviving, and this game sounds great. I love the atmospheric sounds rather than how many other games have a small amount of music that repeats over and over again. If I had one complaint about the audio, it is that the sounds don't seem to fade out with distance quite as gradually as I might like.
One thing that was special about DM, is that when you hit a switch, you could often hear the faint sound of something opening or closing nearby, which let you know what the switch was doing. Often in LoG, even when close to the switched object, I hear nothing. Similarly, sounds for thinks like fireballs hitting something are very loud in the adjacent square, but very quiet two squares away. Maybe I need to adjust my levels, or the volume drops off too dramatically.

Some mainboards are already capable of transmitting the multichannel sound of games via SPDIF. You just need the right chip. For me it works with the Realtek ALC889(A) on my Gigabyte mainboard.
Really happy with that, cause as mentioned, in the past I also had to install an extra soundcard that has the DolbyDigitalLive feature ( Terratec Aureon 7.1 ).

That's true, although the Dolby Digital Live or DTS Connect feature is supported by only specific chips, whether in a separate card or onboard. My other cards do stereo over optical, or 5.1 over optical for movies only. For games, the sound chip has to be able to take the multichannel game audio and encode it into DD or DTS to send over the optical cable, as far as my understanding goes. I have an older Razer Barracuda AC-1 and also a Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Platinum that support DD Live.
