Set Bonus?
Set Bonus?
What sort of surprised me, is that while there are 3 sets of items, there is nothing special about collecting the entire set. They are just items with matching looks and stats, nothing else. I understand that on steam you get an achievement for collecting an entire set, but still...
Since my unarmed fighter wanted the special unarmed gloves, and thus my sword fighter got the Valor gloves, I ended up giving the entire set to my sword fighter, and filled the unarmed fighter with plate items and the Shield of Elements. It looked cool, but it would've been easier to mix-match items, as my unarmed fighter couldn't carry more than a single key. If I was feeding her, she was overburdened just from carrying a piece of food.
It would be nice if these set items would give a small bonus depending on the additional number of set items worn, or a bonus for wearing the complete set.

Odd. I never noticed there wasn't, seemed to me it was just a given! 8|
Re: Set Bonus?
I see no reason given for this idea, it also doesn't seem to make much sense.
The individual pieces in these so-called "armor sets" provide their own benefits to wearing them, no need to copy yet another pointless and nonsensical idea just because some other game(s) do it.

The magic enchantment is strengthened or some such... It's a bit tired and you're just poaching ideas from diablo etc.
I would say it is unnecessary really, the items themselves are already the top items in their class, isn't that bonus enough.

But you already get that bonus if you only wear one or two parts, or if you spread it out among your party members, rather than giving everything to the same character. If you just want strong items, why make them a set?Disasterrific wrote:the items themselves are already the top items in their class, isn't that bonus enough.

Just because other games do it, doesn't mean it's automatically a bad idea...Disasterrific wrote:It's a bit tired and you're just poaching ideas from diablo etc.
And it does serve a purpose. For example, if you have only one heavy armor character, and he's unarmed, do you give him the unarmed gloves, knowing it would break the set bonus?
It doesn't have to be a big bonus, or a stat only bonus. For example, the set bonus of Valor could be that it radiates with light. If you had a full fighter/rogue party, then you just eliminated the requirement of a torch.

As you mentioned in your first post, you get an achievement (yay!) and they also look cool. Maybe they only share a name because they share the same materials/look/stats?Thels wrote:oodyboo wrote:The individual pieces in these so-called "armor sets" provide their own benefits to wearing them,But you already get that bonus if you only wear one or two parts, or if you spread it out among your party members, rather than giving everything to the same character. For example, would you consider "peasant's tunic" and "peasant's breeches" to be a set? And wearing both should give you extra bonuses because your clothes match?
Sure it does. Because there would be no point in buying or playing Grimrock if it's like every other game.Thels wrote:oodyboo wrote:no need to copy yet another pointless and nonsensical idea just because some other game(s) do it.Just because other games do it, doesn't mean it's automatically a bad idea...Disasterrific wrote:It's a bit tired and you're just poaching ideas from diablo etc.
So the purpose is to give you more perks, why not just fire up the console and give yourself whatever you desire? Think carefully about your answer and the assumptions behind it.Thels wrote: And it does serve a purpose. Re: Set Bonus?
Yes, because adding a set bonus makes Grimrock exactly like Diablo.oodyboo wrote:Sure it does. Because there would be no point in buying or playing Grimrock if it's like every other game.
Pointless discussion...

Re: Set Bonus?
It adds flavor to have sets. Again, why does there have to be more?
In your example it would penalize and constrain build options if unarmed fighters had to make that choice, not really good. Likewise for other existing and potential sets. Furthermore, sets are balanced for the sum of their parts. If there's a set bonus then you now have to either weaken the individual items or the full set ends up overpowered.
Just take it as is, they are good items with a common design or origin, it's down to the party on what to make of them - I'm sure a greedy fighter would want the glory of a full set of valor all to himself ;D
