Is this really that hard? Yeah, maybe it takes some practice but once you work out the exact thing to do you just do it until you get fast enough.

OP claiming to be a female instead of a woman makes me wonder about the authenticity of this post.

Her points have been echoed by many, and speaking for myself, I too am tired of the
Nintendo-like puzzles.

I still maintain, for what it is, it's a great game. It's just not my cup-of-tea and not
exactly what I expected (possibly my fault for not reading everything I could find about it
prior to purchasing it).

I do not regret buying it as I am always in favor of helping small development houses.

But for me, the puzzles got too contrived and trial-and-error-y.

I realize it is optional, but it took me about two hours of constant retries to complete the
SpoilerShow
Hall of Flame
puzzle, and I never succeeded without
SpoilerShow
falling down the last pit
. I also had to try the
SpoilerShow
magic missle catching
puzzle at least 20 times before succeeding. From what I have read here, there are a number of people that have had significant problems with some of the timed puzzles, so I think it is a legitimate concern since this leads to frustration rather than enjoyment.

One idea could be to have a few "slow time" consumable magic items in the game, that players could use on occasions such as these, or in tough battles if they prefer. These might be almost analogous to the magical stop time boxes in DM, but in any case could offer a means of helping those with this concern. I suspect my problem was the use of a wireless USB hub connected to my mouse and keyboard, introducing just enough lag to make the puzzles more difficult, and I'll have to try a wired setup on my next playthrough. It could also be that I'm no spring chicken.

Cheers

While I was able to beat all the timed puzzles in this game, I will freely admit that they were, bar none, the least fun part of the experience for me. In fact, I really dread trying to get the Sword of Nex on my subsequent playthroughs, because getting it the first time almost resulted in my fist going through my keyboard at a high rate of speed on a couple of occasions, before I finally realized that it wasn't about twitchy, FPS-style speed so much as it was memorizing the key presses and inputting the next command while the current movement animations were playing.

Battletoads (and other Nintendo Hard games) used this design concept, and ended up being infamous for it, and with good reason. That sort of shit wasn't fun way back then and it isn't any fun now. While some find this sort of thing to be a fun challenge, I think it's fair to say that a larger potion of the playerbase find it at best irritating and at worst, a deal-breaker.

As others have said, it would be nice to someday see a "Timed Puzzle" difficulty slider, or a time-slowing Spell or Consumable to help those who struggle with the timing puzzles.

Lastly, the fact that having a computer running at less than 60 FPS can make some of these things completely impossible is another reason I feel they need to be looked at in one way or another.

Here's the video of the puzzle I can't complete: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbt9GszFIa8

So you say I can skip that puzzle and get to the next level - how?

But I started the game over and have plenty of FOOD now! Now that I know resting consumes food and not to use it until the bar is yellow.
However, I am now stuck on a timed puzzle in Level 3 which I completed successfully the first time around so I think I will have to quit this game and go back to Skyrim.
Oh, Portal has its difficulties, but it seems that at points which are tough, if you play them over about 10 times or so the game is programmed to give you more time so that that you can get through to the next level. Grimrock does not have that feature.

Also, if you listen to the developers' commentary (included with the game), they did extensive beta testing with people of all skill levels and modified the game so that no one could get frustratingly stuck at any point in the game.

Almost Human is a very small organization and certainly didn't have the resources available that major houses have, especially not before releasing their first product.

Nonetheless, as for the puzzle, that pit in the middle of the room with all the pits leads to a Gear key, which is required for an optional item. It is not required to directly advance through the game.
SpoilerShow
To advance, you need to loot the scroll on all four sides of that room (so pass four different minipuzzles), and then return to the second room on the level.

Wait! What? Is this true? I'm sorry to derail this thread a bit but I never noticed this in the hours and hours and hours I put into that game and its shocking to hear it. Color me incredulous... or was I just THAT good at portal.
