Level 10 first puzzle

Post by ProfessorProf »

I've seen a number of threads making this puzzle out to be really easy and obvious, so I'll try to be as clear as I can about how I'm getting stuck.

I'm talking about this place:

I am trying to open the iron grating at point 1. I know that if the pressure plate is down, then the iron gate corresponding to the alcove that the red gem is in will open. In other threads, the advice given is "put the red gem in the alcove near that gate".

I know of alcoves at points 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. 2 and 3 open the gates to the south. 4 appears to do nothing. 6 appears to do nothing. 5 is unreachable while holding the gem.

Where the heck is this mystery alcove I'm missing? I've cut down every curtain and this is all I can find...

The red gem is only used for opening the gates in the room in which it was found.

To re-open the gate at 1, you need to check walls of the hallway just to the east of it that is running north-south: the hallway that runs into the room in which you found the red gem.
I loaded up a saved game to play with this a bit and... the only way that gate closes is if the player closes it and its open when you first get there. So, you have already found the mechanism to open/close it.

I had no problem figuring out this one when I was there. If my memory serves me...

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I remember the red gem is not required to open door number 1. However, you can't have both door 1 and the one opposite (behind you on the map you provided) open simutaneously. There should be a button nearby which opens it, but you have to close the one opposite before you can open door 1. Again; someone please correct me if I remember incorrectly.
You know you're screwed when the light at the end of the hallway is an onrushing ogre wielding a torch.

there are two buttons next to the door, one opens the door you mention while closing the opposing one, the other button 2 blocks away shoots a lighnting bolt thing.
SpoilerShow
the objective is to open that door, go to the other button, shoot the bolt, go to the door button and close/open the doors so that the bolt goes from one room to the other without slamming into the door
...

and then SAVE your game... ...

Save your game, indeed...
All me! I misunderstood what one button was doing. Thanks for the tips.
