I am on level 6 now, since I do not have much free time to play. However, I dissagree with you. Grimrock, is really old old school in every sense. OK I also didn't find any puzzle that could stop me from progressing until now, but probably this is accounted also to the fact that I am much more experienced and prepared to what to expect, than I was when I played EOB or DM. Experience make a great difference in such games, but I suppose you know it already. But, I think there are certain secrets that are really, really hard to find them (I count them as puzzles also, perhaps of a different type), and most importantly there are battles (I play in hard mode, so I don't know if the case is different in other modes), I call them trapped battles since your are obliged to fight with no return back,such as the one to retrieve the final key in level 5, or the initial battle on level 6, which they took me really much time to win, which made me to reload again and again, and to device certain strategies in order to complete them. Not to mention the slimes on level 4 which I still find impossible to win (I plan to return later with my team being in higher level to try it again).

I am guessing on hard, one or two fights are actually easier as they give you different monsters, tougher types but less of them. Which I find ironic. I stopped at level 6 to see what happens for patches and stuff, but next play through I am doing easy to see what it is like, might be able to make that harder than the others by moving less, more irony.

I thought the teleport one was really good, although not hard, more systematic.

What took ages was working out you had to go to the other level for the plate mail room, but that was good as well. Spent ages searching the walls, maybe I missed something, but I think there was only one way.
Puzzles are really good in this game. What is probably annoying some people is... well... what they said, in the various threads.

Considering you're thinking of a PS2 controller, I'm assuming you're used to play on your PS2 controller, rather than on your keyboard. For this kind of stuff it's just whatever you're used to. For those of us that are used to a keyboard, moving around on a keyboard goes a lot easier than moving around on a controller.

So no, I don't think the developers used a controller when they made that puzzle. It's probably harder on you, because you're not used to the keyboard as an input device for action games. Hopefully it'll get better for you as you're getting used to the keyboard. :)

When you step forward on the pressure plate that closes the door behind you, immediately step right, right and back. You should be able to make it before the spiders spawn and surround you. Then you have a wall on either side, and can pick the spiders off as they move up in front of you one after another. You can also back up further, and try to move around, as the hallway is huge, but be careful not to aggro the ogre!

I only managed by running back to the crystal after every kill.

It's funny to read how people have problems with different aspects of the game. I'm obviously one of the newer generations without much patience since I most definately looked the harder puzzles up on the internet. I try for 10 to 20 minutes or quit the game and try it later again with a fresh mind, but if it doesn't come to me anytime soon I will look it up. I'm not going to frustate myself to much over it.
I had no problems with the fighting or reflex/speed puzzles though. I guess my 13 years of playin FPS shooters help me with this, allthough those games play completely different it certainly helped my eye-hand coordination...specially when behind an pc ;)

The problem is there is no way you can look these kind of problems up on the internet to find a solution. You really have to do it yourself.
The only suggestion I can give you is use A,S,D,W and Q, E for your movement. Your mouse should only be used to point your crosshair at where you want it. q,w,e,a,s,d come naturally for me. I don't have to think or look ... I just move and turn where I want to go. There is no way creatures in LoG can challenge me because of that, unless the fighting space is limited and there are atleast 3 mobs.

I wish there was a way to help people that have problems with the speed/reflex puzzles though.

Really took the joy out of playing at that point.. im on lev 6 now trying to get past the pits to get the

3rd key... been 2 days since i tried.. may just call it a day


i love the basic setup of the game i was a huge dungeon master fan and of course played all the wiz

titles.. i just cant handle the coordination required at the lower levels.. so good luck

If I had to play this game on an ps2 controller I would be doomed. Q,W,E,A,S,D can be managed by your middle three fingers of your left hand.
I'm used to it for more then 14 years so it comes naturally for me, but I guess that if your used to controllers this will be really hard.

Exactrly what I meant when saying strategies. For example even for getting the last key on level 5 (to open the door to level 6) I found a strategy that avoided the whole fight

Just place an item on the niche before taking the key, so nothing happens (an indiana jones like solution)
, although I prefered not to follow it but rather fight to get the experience.

I used this strategy to kill 2 or 3 of them but then going quiqly through the corridors I relaized that they are too many so I preferred to leave them for later.

To build upon my previous comment, I would like to comment on people saying that battles in Grimrock should be more tactical (like in contemporary rpgs). But what more tacticality should somebody want, when you have to device a different strategy for winning each battle. For example there battles in Grimrock where you are trapped, with no space to move (e.g. slimes), there are other where you are trapped in small rooms, others where you are trapped and surounded. What is the lack of tacticality people spot as a problem. Is it because the tactic should be implemented by the gamer per se , rather than just having the computer's AI perform the steps of yur tactics (like for example in Dragon Age)? After all I play the games for playing by myself not for having the computer play for me!!!

I also found it unnecessary chore, to practice several hours keyboard gymnastics, to pass this room. I'd wish less this kind of challenges. There's no puzzle, just hard gymnastics.

I expected to spent days with this one, but solved it at the third real try. (Was actually disappointed how 'easy' it was).

I didn't realize that was possible until after, and I probably wouldn't have done it anyhow. If it doesn't respawn endlessly, I clear it out. What I did was:

Pick up the gold key, then immediately put it back in again. That opens the monsters, but keeps the front door open. That way, you could lure the monsters one by one to the small hall in the front, and kill them off there.
