I really don't know why I liked Menzoberranzan enought to play through it twice because looking back, it's a pretty average game. Strangely enough, it offered the player to choose between freeform movement or grid based movement. Both of those options felt a little awkward but I went with the freeform.
Heh I remember being stuck in Menzoberranzan because in grid movement some rocks blocked my way in a dungeon and then I figured out with free movement I could squeeze through them and I was cursing out loud for all the wasted time, fun times ^.^

Have you thought about Free Movement in LoG? I guess that's one step away from uneven floor and Daggerfallizing it >.<

In other news, Black Crypt was another cool DM clone that had the innovation of fluid travel thrown objects and spell (instead of the square by square movement of DM and EotB). Party and Monsters still moved abruptly though and this is something I really like that it was "fixed" in LoG.

Another thing I think was introdcued in EotB 2 was mobs that sidestepped and immediately attacked you so you couldn't kite for ever in a 2x2 room. Or if you attacked with more than 2 attacks your move was delayed a bit and you got counter attacked (maybe this was Black Crypt, I forget).
And of course in EotB 3 we got the ALL ATTACK button which is something I definitely want to see in LoG (maybe a mod).

1. DSA - Sternenschweif
2. DSA - Schicksalsklinge
3. Ultima 9...
4. Arx fatalis

Nobody will knowthe frist two, because there are only in german :). But specially "Sternenschweif" was my favorit game...

Just to show what kind of game there were:

In "Schicksalsklinge" you one had the possibility to steal gems or gold from a gods temple. The game asked the player three times, if he REALLY want to steal stuff from a gods temple. If you steal anywhere, the game sets a silent counter of 1000 footsteps. So the player plays on, overwrite his savegames (you only had 4) and then all partymembers instantly dies when the counter was on 0! NO WARNING! NO MERCY! NO HINTS! You just have to restart the game :)

Never play arround with gods, you always loose...

....big gap!....

I found Return to Chaos to be the best DM, DM2, CSB 'emulator' for the PC, and have got a large (unfinished) adventure in development using the fantastic RTC editor.
Same here, allthough Chaos Strikes Back deserved the nr.1 spot since it's just a masterpiece, but also very very hard.
I'd like to add Bard's Tale on position 5.

These days I still play Everquest 2, allthough the feeling it gave me when I played it when it got released(my first mmorpg) will never return there has yet to be an MMORPG that comes close to EQ2. Tried lots, but eq2 has so incredibly much to offer... and skill certainly matters. Allthough if your no pro like me you will be fine as well :)

They where all published by Sir-Tech (wizardry devs) as Realms of Arkania: The Northlands Trilogy-games in English language.

I didn't know that they were ever translated. All three are well worth playing and maybe some english speaking rpg enthusiast missed them. The highlight of the series is definitely the second (Startrail) but you can import your party from the first, so playing them in order is recommended.

The third part is also good, but a little limited since you're confined to a single city which removes the overland travel aspect of the other two titles. Talking about overland travel... You actually need some survival gear, when setting out into the wilderness. Going naked into the woods will more effectively kill your party then any combat encounter.
