Don't know about that. I ended the game with about the same experience as always, having made level 13 while on dungeon level 10, and I had many, many mobs die in the cloud. EDIT: That's the Poison Cloud spell. I didn't use Poison Bolt all that much, so don't know about the cloud associated with that.

The iron golems at the end are immune to poison, by the way, but I usually take them out with a ranged rogue or two anyway. Finished the game with only one wipe .. I got trapped, and the big guy rolled over me. The game was as much fun as any of them, and more so than some. I think next, I'll dual spec a fire/earth mage. If there IS a next. Sort of burnt out at the moment.
Thats why i'm alrdy level 15/16 on level 6 :)

Kill 3 Ugguardians (1 set free by pressing the first 4 buttons in the fire mace), then the Cave crab, then life crystal, 10 skeletons in the haunted halls, 3-4 snails. All in all thats 3090 Exp, for one of your characters its 3862.Then back to the Ugguardians. I think you need about 8-10minutes for this little round. I play on hard.
And my problem is only to hit the Ugguardians with all 4 characters before they die. One shockbolt can instantly kill them, so i use him as the last.

The only thing i did not like about the Earth Mage was the DoT system of his playstyle, you set up some clouds and lure mobs into them, but that kills them slowly, IMO that's good for some encounters but bad for the majority of them (have in mind that i prefer direct damage!)
Well, as I've tried to convey, the dot is just part of my normal melee. I never set up a cloud and lure mobs into it. I just start a melee and fire off the dot early in that melee. The mobs stay put in the cloud because I (usually) don't dance around in melee. And it's not slow. It speeds up the melee very noticeably.

I like it. But then, I also like ranged magic attacks, which the earth mage is not that good at. They're different play styles, and I like them both. The point I've tried to make in this thread is that earth magic is quite viable .. surprisingly so, in fact, when poison bolt is mostly ignored and poison cloud is used as a normal part of melee.

I went through on my last playthrough to master earth mage on one magic user. The annoying part is one when an enemy dies from the dot portion of the poison spell no exp is given. The other thing is when you get that empowered poison from staff or skill you can not strafe without poisoning yourself. It did come in handy eating through goromogs damage shield but then they often died in the dot and gave me no exp.
Fire and Air do come out on top imo for best damage output.

Your'e playing a different game than me then. Donno what else to say. Maybe it's the Poison Bolt vs Poison Cloud thing... Cloud is good, Bolt sucks .. not 100% true, but in a nutshell.

Don't understand this "don't get exp if mob dies in a cloud'. Somebody pls elucidate. As far as I know, that's entirely false. My earth magic guys have not lacked exp.

Only happen with the cloud component of the *poison bolt*. And i tested it, you indeed gain no xp. This bug does not affect regular poison cloud or the poison bolt itself, just the secondary cloud that come after the poison bolt.

I see. Thank you. Poison Bolt is not a great spell to begin with. Poison Cloud, on the other hand, is awesome.

If an enemy dying in the poison cloud didn't give experience, it wouldn't give any to anyone, not just your Mage.

I've learned since that this applies to the "cloud" associated with Poison Bolt, and not to the Poison Cloud spell. I accept that as true, though I haven't noticed it myself. i don't use Poison Bolt very often.
