A massive heap of custom portraits (400+)
Re: A massive heap of custom portraits (400+)
Maybe they shouldn't put up hi-res non-watermarked images they used in commercial projects then?

Re: A massive heap of custom portraits (400+)
I read something today while looking for character portraits to convert. I can't find it again, but it said something like this:gambit37 wrote:Hmmmm, well that doesn't make it right There are a lot of semi-professional and pro artists on there whose work is done on commission for big game companies, and their contracts specifically deny copyright to anyone other than either the original artist, or the games company themselves. This is why most artists state very clearly on their Deviant Art pages that their art is not to be used elsewhere.
We firmly believe that our display of these images will not hamper the sale of their product.
That applies to this too. I do not believe that me posting portraits here is going to have a negative influence on the artists' sales of their images and prints. Especially considering that they published them on a public site for everyone to access. That'd be like parking your car, and leaving the keys inside and the door wide open, and then complaining it was stolen.
I'm not trying to make a case for myself, I am merely suggesting that strict policing like this is neither necessary nor logical. After all, the character portraits of Eye Of The Beholder, Baldurs Gate and other games are the property of their respective companies as well, but do they care that people use them as avatars somewhere else? I doubt it. Unless anyone makes a profit out of it, which I don't.

Although lack of commercial harm is part of a fair use defense, it's only part of a defense. Redistributing copyrighted work without checking the license it is under or asking the creator's permission can be risky. And if they did specifically state not wanting it to be used the way you have used it, you're just asking for serious trouble.
As for the car analogy: the thief would still get the same punishment if caught. And putting an image on a public site doesn't grant any permission to redistribute.
If you're substantially modifying the images (with cropping and resolution changes) it's a little bit better, but still very grey if you're not checking, especially on a site like DeviantART that has a clear copyright policy and ways to contact the artist.
(Disclaimer: I'm not a lawyer, and the only copyright rules I know much about are U.S. rules.)

Great pics, now please explain how to use them in the game itself.

use the download links, place them files into the appropriate folder: "Documents/Almost Human/Legend Of Grimrock/Portraits"TomAce wrote:Great pics, now please explain how to use them in the game itself.

Insectoid portraits seem the hardest to come by. I admit, I don't recall many intelligent insect-humanoid'ish races in the fantasy games I've played. I would really appreciate it if someone found some good insectoids.
Until then, I offer these from the only setting I can think of with insects(Yugioh lol)

Mind if I add them to the insectoids pack?Miles-McStyles wrote:Insectoid portraits seem the hardest to come by. I admit, I don't recall many intelligent insect-humanoid'ish races in the fantasy games I've played. I would really appreciate it if someone found some good insectoids.

Go ahead. I'm not gonna make my own thread.
