Skyrim feels empty because at no point do you need to think. I've grown increasingly tired of these rollercoaster experiences being labled as "games." Grimrock is a fun game rather than a poor movie, which most games have become today (it makes the most money unfortunately).

yeah, no need to compare this with Skyrim. skyrim wasn't meant to be an old school hack/slash puzzler. Really, people are just saying they like hack-n-slashers better modern RPGs. nothin wrong with that.

I've been craving skyrim lately, but I'm playing Grimrock instead. Haven't played Skyrim since Grimrock came out. There are 2 directions, 2 different puzzles complicating matters, I can go in now in Grimrock, both hard as hell. I'd rather try both those then complete one of my current quests in Skyrim... now there's a comparison for ya!!
I'd take one of the four wooden clubs I was carrying and just bash open doors with it.

I've never played DM or EOTB, so you can't chalk this up to Nostalgia.

In four/five still shots and 30 seconds, LoG gave me a premise, a motivation, and a goal. Skyrim made me sit through a 10 minute cinematic and accomplished none of that. I have not heard a single word of dialogue from my band of prisoners, but I *care* about them a lot more than I care about anyone in Skyrim.

Overall though, I think there is just a sense of tension/wonder in LoG that I haven't seen in a long, long time. On level 3 of the dungeon I could hear the skittering of numerous spiders behind a closed door. Most modern games you would just throw the door wide open, obliterate everything, and quickload if you die for some reason. I spent nearly 10 minutes surveying the area trying to figure out a proper escape plan if the spiders started to overwhelm me. I had to think about the teleporters, how they would interact with the spiders, and which way to run if I had to risk going through them. It was exhilarating. Likewise, after dying in the "welcome to your grave" room, I came across a room with a pressure play by the entrance. I learned my lesson and sprung the trap, avoiding an otherwise certain death. The high I got from that simple action was a lot more than any satisfaction I got from killing multiple dragons in Skyrim.

They are different games clearly, but to me Grimrock feels infinitely more fulfilling. Skyrim remains unbeaten to this day, and I can't wait to get back to Grimrock at the end of each workday.

I'll join the club! I only played Skyrim for 6 hours when it came out, then just let it be for weeks until I suddenly noticed I have it still installed :D Tried to start a new game but realized I'd have to watch the starting cinematic again, so I just uninstalled the game.

Maybe I'm too old school, still playing DOS games, NES, SNES etc. but I certainly love some new games too :)
It's just getting too much cinematic / story based with less game play...

There were a lot of games that I loved when I was a kid, but Dungeon Master and Eye of the Beholder I simply could not enjoy. I tried both of them several times, but just lost interest so quickly.

I just finished Legend of Grimrock last night. To my amazement, this game was just so insanely enjoyable. In fact, no other game I've played in the last decade has even come close to this in terms of... Just how simply enjoyable, satisfying, and interesting it was.

I am officially joining the "other games are doing it wrong" club, heh. :)

Skyrim is a stepup from Oblivion but a major step down from Morrowind. Speaking from my 1000+ hours spent with Morrowind and 100+ hours with Skyrim, Grimrock has ignited a childish glee in me that hasn't been done since 2003 (Morrowind). Therefore, in terms of "Blackshark's Greatest Games Ever", Grimrock is a solid 2nd behind Morrowind and just ahead of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning/Dragon Age: Origins.

That's how good this game is. With the modding scene I am expecting, while it still won't beat Morrowind, it will come within inches.

Congrats to Almost Human for filling a much needed niche in the market and not catering to the masses ala Call of Duty (and Diablo III :( )

16 hours played on Grimrock. It's just as I remembered Dungeon Master being. challenging, mysterious... "what's around that corner?" feel. Great game. Outstanding deal..more game than the amount of money paid, which is rare for a new game. And...first game I pre-ordered in a long long time.

I played a bit of Skyrim too. I found it to be the superior game of these two. the visuals, atmosphere and combat are exceptional. It feels like a living, breathing world. When I come across a new place I just have to check it out. When I come across a new area I like to just stand there and see what might be in the distance.

Both make you rethink how you should approach different situations. Not all bash this and bash that. Refreshing.

I like well made games. Skyrim had it's wonderful bugs and slightly less than par animations (HORSES! ESPECIALLY JUMPING HORSES!) Who cares if Skyrim has a massive world and amazing graphics. The small details are what count, so please, next time I drown don't turn me into an instant ragdoll, because I don't think that's how it works. Oh, and next time I jump off a mountain, a little yelling might do some good, not just a cheap falling animation until I touch the cliff face and then turn into a ragdoll yet again. Pay a bit more attention to making the small details better and I'll enjoy it a lot better. As for Grimrock, I love it!
I fall down pits, therefore, I am.
