Man I am so FULL I cannot walk [SUGGESTION]

Post by PSY »

So,

it seems that I'm not the only one who's permanently overloaded.

There are some items I just don't want to throw away because
a) it's weapons I might use later because I'm not sure which skill tree I'm gonna put points in
b) it's food that weighs a ton but I don't want to chew it now
c) it's scrolls with hints I might need later
d) it's stuff I'm not sure what it's good for
e) it's stuff I don't use but it's so cool I don't want to waste it
f) it's armor I can't use yet and I don't know if I'm going to wear it later
g) it's blueberry pie
h) let's face it, those bombs are like lead

Sure, I could dump the stuff somewhere, but I don't really want to run all the way back and rummage through the heaps of stuff I left ^^

So I have two suggestions to get rid of this problem:

1) Magic containers
Magic containers can be everything from sacks to boxes, backpacks, purses or even small chests. The special thing about magic containers is their weight reduction capability.
Let's say a magic sack with 6 slots has 30% weight reduction. So I can put a full set of heavy armor + shield in it (about 40kg), and the stuff actually weighs only 28kg.

2) The omnipresent stash
Just put a few stashes with enough slots at certain spots in the dungeon. These stashes are magically linked, meaning the player can put stuff into the stash in level 2 and get the stuff back from the stash in level 7. Would save a lot of time and omg-I-shoudn't-have-dumped-that-****ing-axe-moments 8-)

Think about it :)

Personally, I think part of the fun of these types of games is resource management and deciding what to keep and what to drop. It definitely adds to the tension. If you added magic bags or a bank-like stash, you might as well do away with carrying capacity altogether.

please no. inventory management is part of the game. your suggestions would make that entire mechanic pointless.

keep a stash wherever you want. use the boxes/sacks to organize. when you're a level down from your last stash, if you feel like you need some stuff from the stash, move the items you still care about while it's still easy.

honestly, most things you're keeping in your inventory because you might need, you won't need, ever.

If they were going to do any of those suggestions, why not just eliminate weight entirely?

You're SUPPOSED to have to chose what to carry and what to leave behind. That wasn't an accident.

Or just cheat your chars to have 50pnts in everything and you'll get a nice 300/400 capacity for each char

I partially understand this problem, I myself am that kind of rpg gamer that likes to keep everything he finds, such as small notes, gems, etc. because I feel like I may need them in the future, and don't want to backtrack because I've discarded that one item I really need. Fortunately this game doesn't punish you if you choose to leave stuff behind (it does slightly but not too much). Be sure to carry those few things you may need like stones, torches, puzzles hints you already need to solve, and important items such as keys or gems. As for the food you won't have a shortage of it as many enemies respawn in the latter levels, a crate or a couple of sacks are enough. Unfortunately you will have to make a choice of what piece of equipment to keep and what to discard, but you will still be able to finish the game don't worry.

Pack rating never works well in these sort of games. Part of the design is the limits on what you can take with you.

And nothing is stopping you from making your own stashes around each level and moving them as needed. Which I might add is the common tactic used in these games.

I would pile up unneeded food and torches near the stairs or crystals.

I would also like to give you this.

Saice's Guide to Pack Ratting in Dungeon crawlers.

1) Bags over Boxes : I can not stress this enough boxes tend to weight a ton more then bags. Yes they have more slots but they weigh a lot more empty for it.

2) If you have a lot of one item then there is a really good chance you have to many of them and should think about tossing or caching them.

3) Unless there seems to be a good puzzle reason to hang onto the physical object that is a note or scroll just write done the info and chuck it.

4) Build stashes. The stairs into or off of the level are good places but any room with a door can work and gives it double use as a safe place to rest up.

5) Realize that 90% of these sort of games have one HUGE flaw. Stuff picked up by your mouse do not apply their weight to any party member. With this you can use those heavy boxes to store up extra stuff and when it comes time to move your stash you can just pick up the box with your mouse and walk to where you need to then drop it down.

I came across a weapon type that I hadn't planned on using when I made my characters, and I THREW IT ON THE GROUND.

If it's not an upgrade for anyone, throw it away. If you don't collect useless gear, you can pretty much carry everything else you need without any trouble.
