You don't need the scroll to cast a spell, just high enough level in its elemental power.

The scrolls are just there to "show you the combination".. you do not need to "scribe scrolls into a spellbook" or something similar.. so you can cast any spell your mage has the ability (skillpoints) to cast at any time regardless if you read the corresponding scroll or not...

I am now level 6 and still getting killed lots and stumped on the puzzles but having lots of fun. After playing MMOs for the last few years this game is really putting my brain to work!

one more question regarding mages

To cast a spell do I need to find a scroll that shows the combination or can I cast it if I already know? Thinking about starting over since I made my archer high in DEX >.<
well, since you did ask, prepared for it to be spoiled:

if you know the rune combination to cast a spell, you don't need to find the scroll for it first, but you do still need to have enough skill points allocated to the correct skill. this does make the game dramatically easier on subsequent playthroughs, but you're correct, it's not actually mentioned in the tutorial, for example. there's suggestions that you can reverse engineer the spells if you realize what the runes "mean". top left being "fire" and top right being "air" for example. middle seems to mean "buff" or "enchantment", and so on. so if you metagame it like that, you can probably reason that an intelligent or inventive mage could "re-discover" or fumble along to re-create spells without help.

also... if you're still going to waste the party slot on a mage, make him Ice.
