I play on a huge screen, and when the spiders lunge at me up close, they are about as large on my screen as I am in real life.

I don't have any problems with real spiders, but these spiders have made me jump a few times when they surprised me. None of the other creatures in the game have that effect on me, but I think it's the sound they make more than anything else.

You don't have to think spiders look "disgusting" or anything to have arachnophobia, and they certainly don't have to be real. All arachnophobes are different.

Personally, I think spiders look awesome but all sense of logic vanishes the moment I'm confronted with one. Phobias are often not rational. I.e, you cannot rationalize with it by saying "oh, but they're not dangerous" or whatever.

Happy to say I'm not scared of the Grimrock spiders (too large)... well, not phobia-wise anyway. I'm rationally scared of them because they're freaking fast and spew horrible poison

When I saw the spiders for the very first time it's when I turned a corner, my son was sitting beside me and the speakers where very high we both jumped and I screamed like a girl... my son still laugh at me because of that.. I hate big ugly spiders...

Spiders exist in many games. Giant spiders are pretty much a go-to critter for fantasy. Why is it that I have never seen arachnophobic people complain about it before, yet for this game it's a problem lamented about almost as often as circle strafing? Did Almost Human invest heavily in advertising at an arachnophobe convention?
