The way the levels are currently designed, all the ceiling tiles would have to be replace along with how noticable items are. Later in the game when the buttons are no bigger then your thumb you need that sight. Pushing the camera BACK would only hurt searching for things.
Honestly, I think its straight up stupid. The game is so heavily designed to be from the first person that its not even funny. A strategic view might work, but once again, hidden walls would need something new. A thirdperson mode would require not only models for the characters, but all the armor and weapon types, along with animations for wizardry and bow shooting. There are just so many issues with making this, that in the long run, it wouldn't be worth it.
For a FPS you want a FOV slider, not a thirdperson option. Would Halo benefit from a thirdperson option today, I'm talking the original, would it benefit from it at all? Not at all because shooting would be terrible.
Play Left 4 Dead in third person to get what I mean in further detail. Overall, so many mechanics would have to be changed and so many thing added that it just wouldn't be worth it in the long run. A strategic view would be neat but, once again, lots of coding.
