Not without my spellbook

Casting spells is fun and "magey". I say remove the skill preqs and open up the spells. Level restriction is fine, and the skills could still increase the power of particular spells.

"I put on my wizards hat and equib my magic staff..."

On a more serious note I must say that I strongly disagree, doing so would remove any feeling of acomplisment from leveling up the magic skills and overall just make the mage class much less exciting. Not to mention that it'd "munchkinlify" mages even more.

But don't you think the mage just feel like a variant of the rouge the way it is now? I know I only used Ice Bolt the whole game. Fine spell that but still, felt like I wasn't getting that mage-feeling.

You do have a point about that. I also felt that mages should be a bit more then glass cannons, but the thing that can fix that is a greater variety of spells, and not simply unlocking everything from the get-go.

At least, that's what I think. Maybe for the next games they'll get more varied roles!

Honestly I would be happy if they lacked the spells to spellcraft if they were all unlockable by say 15-20 points in spell craft. While the specilization lines would pump damage and lower cost.
It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

This. The mages would be much more interesting if they weren't just basically ranged damage generators. This would also allow more diversity between the spell schools. Right now, the schools are remarkably similar. Heck, it would have been nice if one of them had "enchant melee weapon" instead of enchant arrow, flavor X. Slow, haste, push, stoneskin, etc. would have all provided interesting variation without breaking the game design or puzzles.

As mentioned above, I think the addition of spells for buffing would be great.

Im with you in this one bro. I remember getting to level 7 in the fire school and say "oh cool, this is the part where i learn fireball!" nope! "okay, this is the part where i learn fire shield, yes yes yes, finally the efreeti will stop owning me so hard!" nnnnnnope! "okay what the hell is this spell then!?" ... " Enchant fire arrow, are you F&%$ing kidding me!?" (look to the dagger/assassination rogue) "what good is that to me!?"
