Adding scope to the level editor? New meshes/textures/etc..

Post by regomar »

I am incredibly excited that AH has said they are working on a level editing suite of tools. As a matter of fact, many of my friends purchased this game mostly because of this as they are hard core modders.

There has been very little data released on what you plan to allow in the editor, but I have heard it mentioned a few times in these forums by hopeful fans that you might allow us to do more than simply edit the levels. I have played many games that allowed the addition of assets such as meshes and textures and I have found that those games tend to live basically forever and continue selling well past their prime. A best example of this is Morrowind which STILL after 10 years has a very active and excited modding community.

Imagine this game with not only thousands of custom levels, but new monsters, made by the fans, new spells, new weapons... Even letting us add new wall textures would do wonders for modding and playing enjoyment!

It would make LoG truly the best dungeon crawler ever made and it would NEVER die.

As for the people who might (predictibly) say 'Well if players can make this content they won't buy DLC and a sequel'. I'd say this has been disproven with every heavily moddable game out there. Did Oblivion not sell because Morrowind was still active? Did they not make a Neverwinter Nights 2? hell, there was a level editor for Prince of Persia (the original) and there were plenty of sequels to that.

I for one intent to happily purchase any additional content for this game AH choose to put out. I loved the entire game and have beaten it twice now. Even with the level editor I'd love to still see and purchase additional mind-bending levels from the geniuses at AH.

So, thoughts?

I'd love it if we had the ability to make new creatures, weapons tile-sets and so on. Especially as I wanna at some point see if I can move my own crazy prison dungeon from my own little fantasy world into this game. And that would definitely require some new enemy's and weapons.

It might seem a strange idea, but I would be interested in setting up dungeons where the "outside" world coincides with the dungeon. Such as, areas where you would enter an area actually being outside (day or night), and then perhaps back inside the dungeon once again at a later time. New textures for night and day skies, and new lighting ideas would be used. Probably be a little heavy on the CPU in these areas on the highest resolutions/settings. The idea is, the entire world is really still a dungeon, but gives the illusion of it being completely out from underground.

A import function for custom assets like mehes and textures is absolutly mandatory since I want to see dungeons in a futuristic setting.

Yesss... Grimrock in space! Change the dungeon into an old space-station, keys to keycards, the healing stones into recreation chambers and so on. I would love to create something like system shock (1) with this editor.

Unfortunatly I never played System Shock 1 or 2. But old space station and keycards is exactly what I am thinking about.^^

It's a very exciting prospect indeed.

The devs said they'll start off with a simple level editor, and steadily introduce more advanced features.

If we'll end up with something as versatile as the Bethesda game's modtools, the results will undoubtedly be pretty amazing!

To be honest, as soon as I read "futuristic setting" above, I immediately reimagined the game with SHODAN as the Big Bad.

"L-L-L-Look at you, prisoners... pathetic creatures of meat and bone (and chitin, where ap-p-p-plicable)."

I just want a dungeon editor to start with. once they get that working then we can talk about extra things.
