I had serious trouble with the puzzle because, even following these directions, I hadn't realized that there were 2 more buttons to push for the secret room to open than to reach the key. I felt really sheepish when I was wandering around and noticed that the first extra button closes a trap door on the opposite side of the pillar that I had to reach to actually open the secret room.
Following your suggestion of leaving my mouse pointer in the center of the screen and not moving it was all it took once I made that realization.
Well, that and quite a few reloads. The timing really *IS* very tight. An extra half-second reaching the first extra button would be hugely helpful, but I suppose that's what the challenge is about.
