GrimBlock Premade Grid (Minecraft world save) 1.3

Post by Saice »

Oh god... shot me.. shot me now before the crazy spreads.

Ok so I did some math. Then I poked some blocks. Then I tweaked it a bit. And heres what I got.

(Edit: Updated the world save now with more options because I'm crazy like that and Sleep is but an illusion to me now)
(Update 1.3 : Added "GrimBlock How To" world save with a basic example set)

GrimBlock 4x4

GrimBlock 6x6

Extra shots of 5x5 you get the idea 4x4 and 6x6 look much the same.

GrimBlock is a set of Minecraft world saves and MCEdit schematic files. In the Zip below you get three superflat worlds and six schematic files. three single floor and three 13 floor schematics for importing via MCEdit. These are all superflat with structures turned off and set on Creative. Some Editing skill will be needed to get full use out of these.

Some numbers.

4x4 : Each floor is 128x128x8 thats 32x32 Cells of 4x4x6 with a 2 block gap between floors.
5x5 : Each floor is 160x160x8 thats 32x32 Cells of 5x5x6 with a 2 block gap between floors.
6x6 : Each floor is 192x192x8 thats 32x32 Cells of 6x6x6 with a 2 block gap between floors.

Why 6 high? Well 4 high space is pretty large from a Minecraft point of view but your floor and ceiling take up 1block each so 6 high is really only 4 blocks on room space. If need be you can make vaulted ceilings by using some of the 2 block floor gap between the floors.

The core schematics for 13 floors are

4x4 : 129x129x105
5x5 : 161x161x105
6x6 : 193x193x105

The extra blocks are from a spine I used to line them all up.

So its all ready to rebuild Grimrock or any other dungeon you want.

Enjoy. I'll be working on my own.

thanks. And the file is updated now.

My only suggestion is if you load the 6x6 and are not running on a 64 bit version of java or have a low end machine turn your view distance down and turn off smooth lighting. Large objects with complex shadows are know to cause lag on lower end systems.

Dynamic lighting mod would go very nicely with this.

I could see that. Honestly I tend to run vanilla MC with only a simple texture pack (painterly) not a huge fan of mods. But dynamic lighting and the Water mods both make me think about it.

Ok Example of the first room. Note using the default MC textures here and the gate is non-functional. Just wanted to get a feel for how it would look. Basically you knock out the pillars of a cell to make one grid space. Now because with Map systems like the ones used in Grimrock you will never have back to back walls so you can add details like my walls have here but using some of the space of the cell next door.

Made using the 4x4 GrimBlock world.

One thing is clear it will be nearly imposable to remake a true Grimrock clone simply because of the lack of ways to do teleporting cells and the such. But I do feel a fairly close recreation is possible and of course inspired dungeons will work fine.

Thanks. I originally was just doing this for myself. Trying to make a 3d graph paper sort of thing. But the original cube of floors took a few hours even breaking up MC edit to duplicate floors. I figured after that much work I would share the files for anyone else that might need it helping hand with dungeon building.

Saice...I detect old school gamer. Great work...I was thinking of doing this myself. I still might build something Grimblock-y on the server I play on (Blockaholics.org :D). Again, excellent work, and thanks for sharing it with us.
