Foooooooooooooooooooood!
Re: Foooooooooooooooooooood!
That's quite true for a number of games. On the other side it also depends on the game design as being unfair/weird/hard was part of stretching classic games as well. For instance i never liked those games where bad steering was part of the game design. There exist many brilliant classics which still shine today but there are also a lot more which aren't fun anymore and once you replay them in an emulator you realise that your memories of the games were better than the games actually were.

i DO actualy play mostly old games this days. What memories you talk about, mate?lowzei wrote:That's quite true for a number of games. This is a good point I had overlooked. I'm also not sure if people are having trouble because they are resting too much or because they are taking too long with puzzles/secrets. Well, it's up to the dev team to figure that out. Or, of course, they could just modify things based on the difficulty level, which seems like the simplest thing.Mystify wrote:Well, one thing that food does is limit how much you can rest. I can easily see a lot of abuse if you can just rest after every single scuffle without penalty. and it is another resource to manage with your carrying capacity. Even if you aren't running out of food, the presence of it still effects your game.
Re: Foooooooooooooooooooood!
It's definitely the time taken on puzzles, in my case. I have a habit of thinking I've figured it out, just a case of bad timing in my movements, so I carry on repeatedly trying to make things work the way I've assumed (this actually is down to experience, though, as I often find it's a case of bad timing as to why I'm failing); in reality, what I need to do in LoG is just look in another direction entirely, instead of banging my head against a wall. The end result: I'm low on food because of time taken.hapro wrote:This is a good point I had overlooked. Re: Foooooooooooooooooooood!
Food, seems to be a mechanic they had to put in by necessity when they made it possible to rest anywhere at any time and replenish all health and energy. One troublesome mechanic leading to another I would say.
If it weren’t for this I would have suggested hunger becoming an option when starting a new game. I would still like to propose this, but also I would like to suggest they first find another way to limit resting.

Re: Foooooooooooooooooooood!
Meh, by the time you get to the later levels you have so much food you'll need to drop/eat it just to stay underweight. I don't think it's a problem at all.

@Whisper
As i wrote there are many games which you once enjoyed a lot but which aren"t fun anymore if you replay them today due to their limited game design because gaming and your habits/expectations have evolved quite a bit. Only a minority is still fun to be played and those are really great games due to their design, their mechanics, the balancing, the attention to detail and so on.
For instance i can still play games like Asteroids (VCS 2600), Moon Patrol, Dig Dug, Dragon's Lair (Arcade), Boulder Dash, Bruce Lee, Jammin, Jumpman Jr., Les Mans (C64), Portal, Archon, Dungeon Master, Bubble Bobble, The Bard's Tale (Amiga), Chip's Challenge (Lynx), Tetris (Gameboy) most of the Lucas Arts adventures and so on but there are tons of games which aren't fun by todays standards anymore due to their limitations.

Or they could just leave it alone because it isn't broken.hapro wrote:This is a good point I had overlooked. Re: Foooooooooooooooooooood!
If that was the case, more people would be having a problem. The possibility of the problem occurring exists as part of the game design. It's one challenge you have to overcome to pass the game. You're missing the point, I'm not asking for an over-abundance of food, it's just that I suspect the designers based the supply on an over-familiarity with their own dungeon.
Some people will have a greater issue with it than others, but if no one at all is having an issue, it's probably not tuned correctly either. That pretty much goes without saying.
There are points in the game where your food will run lower than others. This is intentional. There are small amounts of food to find all over the place. You're probably making it more of a problem than it is. You might find enough food around the next corner to tide you over.
In short, no, just because it's something you're finding to be a significant challenge does not mean it's improperly designed. If you really want to insist on that mindset, just use a cheat or something. Make it how you think it *should* have been designed.
Re: Foooooooooooooooooooood!
Well I (re)played the entire EOB series + Lands of Lore less than a year before LoG and they are a breeze compared to LoG in standard. BTW in EoB1 there is quite enough food, until your cleric learns "Create Food". Here food is a real problem (I can't see how people can say there is too much)."Normal" in today games are "easy" in classic games.
Now that I posted, I can go back starving in level 7
